Nigeria youngster Alex Iwobi made his ninth start of the season for Arsenal who failed to depose Chelsea at the top of the English Premier League log with a 1-1 draw with bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur in Sunday’s lunch time kick at the Emirates Stadium, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
It was the third draw of the season for the Gunners. The draw sees Arsenal drop to the third spot with 24 points from 11 games while Tottenham remain fifth with 21 points from the same number of games. The draw was Tottenham’s fourth straight this season as Mauricio Pochettino’ s side remain unbeaten in the EPL.
Iwobi who was making his 14th appearance in all competitions this season also stretched his goal drought to 18 games since having last scored for the Gunners in April.
He was replaced in the 70th minute by Olivier Giroud.
An unfortunate own goal from Kevin Wimmer handed Arsenal the lead in the 41st minute of the game.
Wimmer became the second player after Chris Armstrong to score an own goal in the 49 EPL meetings between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur when he headed in Mesut Ozil’s free-kick into his own net.
But Spurs restored parity with their first shot on target from the spot through Harry Kane, who was returning after a long injury lay-off, in the 51st after Moussa Dembele was fouled in the box by Laurent Koscielny.
Iwobi had Arsenal’s best chance in the encounter in the 33rd minute but failed to finish off a brilliant move started off by Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez as his tame shot was saved by Hugo Lloris.
Seven minutes later Arsenal broke away again with a swift counter attack and Walcott was played through down the right flank before firing a thunderous strike which came off the upright.
Ozil however could not convert the rebound on the volley.Copyright © 2023 Completesports.com All rights reserved. The information contained in Completesports.com may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed without the prior written authority of Completesports.com.
