Joel Obi Gets World Cup Boost, Returns From Injury For Torino

By Adeboye Amosu:                              Nigeria midfielder Joel Obi boosted his chances of making the country’s squad to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia  after making a return from injury to the bench in Torino’s 2-1 win against SPAL in a Serie A fixture on Sunday, reports Completesportsnigeria. com.

Obi has missed Torino’s last three league games due to injury, which put his participation at the World Cup in doubt.

The former Inter Milan player last featured for Torino in their 1-1 draw against AC Milan on April 18 as a 57th minute for Tomas Rincon.

Obi has featured in 22 league games for Torino this season and has scored five goals.

Torino rallied back from a goal down to win the game.

Alberto Grassi put SPAL ahead in the 22nd minute but Torino  scored two goals through Andrea Belotti and Lorenzo Silvestri.

  • too old to play!
I admire the job Joel Obi’s publicist is doing, but the world cup/Super Eagles is not the platform for relunching your career.

Who in the team is he seriously going to displace?

    • Not age per se but he is playing in one of the most difficult leagues in the world . He deserves a chance my fears is injury prone

Apart from Mikel and Ndidi I don’t think anyone else is better than Joel Chukwuma Obi. He plays for Torino, that’s some club you know. 5 goals and 4 assist from a defensive Midfield position is quite remarkable. Particular in Serie A. Our midfielders going to the Mundial barring any unforeseen circumstances should be Mikel, Ndidi, Obi, Onazi, Etebo and Ogu. Agu should not be any where near the list at all.

“Agu should not be any where near the list at all”. Lol. Seems you completely gave up on the guy. Well i don’t blame you. The guy did not help himself especially in the world cup qualifier against Zambia. Let’s see what happens when the final list comes out.

@kester lol! The truth is that over the last two seasons Joel Obi has been one of our top midfielders in Europe. It’s not that easy to be playing professional football in the Scudetto for 8 years. His most eye catching statistics is that he’s always ever present on the starting 11 whenever he’s fit. Be it at Inter, Parma, and now Torino. Those are not easy clubs to just walk into their starting 11 after any injury setback. He’s to me the Nigerian Edgar Davids. If I have to choose between Joel Obi, Mikel Agu, Uche Agbo including Ogu. I will choose Obi without blinking an eye. Even Mikel Agu has mostly been injury prone all through his career, now he couldn’t displace Shehu who is our RB from Bursaspor Midfield. I’ll rather have a Midfielder from Scudetto to battle Modric and
Rakitic all day every day. Another midfielder I’ll love to be included in the list is Anderson Esiti, but we’ll see what happens after the list is published. #FLY LIKE AN EAGLE INTO THE FUTURE#

The sort of comments on this page make me laugh. Since when did a 26 year-old become “too old” to play football. I’m talking about the gentleman who says Joel Obi should not represent Nigeria because he’s too old. Yet he is younger than Ighalo, Mikel, Balogun.

Rightly said our six midfielders going to the mundial,Mikel Obi, Onazi, etebo, Joel Obi, Ndidi, John Ogu.with Ebere Eze, as stand by.

  • Mykel 3 years ago

We need him hope, this is a guy that gives his all, that’s why he is always injured, most people don’t know why he gets injured often, it’s largely due to his style o FC play, he is Not afraid to throw his body on d line

  • Abeg this guy should forget going to world cup as he is not always fit, pls rohr look for a replacement who is not injury prone o

  • Abeg joel obi shouldnt near dat list o

Henry (the young Tiger) must go to Russia. Rohr must not fall for this nonsense fowl play.

You’re knocking Joel Obi, but many of you said nothing when Amaju Pinnick, the NFF Chairman was wasting our money travelling to England to beg his kinsman and friend, Mr. Abraham to allow his son Tammy play for Nigeria. It turns out Tammy Abraham does not even have a starting shirt at Swansea, in a relegated EPL side. We like to praise mediocrity in this country.

in case u dont know, fit Joel Obi in an attacking midfield role is FAR better than Mikel Obi anytime anyday.

in case u dont know, Joel Obi is a utility player who can comfortably play as a Left Back (yes Marcelo’s position), Defensive Midfielder, Attacking Midfielder, Left Wing Forward, Right Wing Forward and as a supporting striker.

the list is yet to be released but rest assured that Joel Obi is already in Russia for the World Cup.Unless Rhor does not recognise a good player when he sees one.

I remain a number 1 fan of Joel Obi.

i think it will be a battle between john ogu and joel obi to claim a spot…obi is a fantastic player but what has he contributed to the national team in recent times…he looked too eager to impress and he just was below par and to cap it all he is just recuperating from tough times and even though he is ahead of ogu in terms of league played in…i will select ogu ahead of him…ogu contributions against argentina was superb with one touch accurate passes and his screamer against algeria is just still fresh in my memory…agu should not even near the airport talkless of russia…even he was benched by his new coach…i think the midfield should be ogu, onazi and ndidi as dm and mikel, iwobi, etebo as am with ebere eze or nwakali jnr as standby…i rest my case!

He is good if fit. He gets too injured. He brings something different to the team.. Our team is unpredictable with him playing. You don’t know what to expect.
