By Johnny Edward:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Torino midfielder Joel Obi handed the Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr a major boost ahead of the friendly matches against Poland and Serbia next week by returning to training with the Serie A club ahead of Sunday’s league clash against Fiorentina.
The Super Eagles face Poland on Friday and Serbia four days later in World Cup warm-up matches.
Obi missed Torino’s last game away to AS Roma due to a suspected knockand was reportedly doubtful for a return to the Super Eagles.
But according to the official website of Torino, Obi completed the training on Friday and could be named in the matchday squad for the clash.
“Bonifazi and  Joel Obi  returned to the group and played the entire session with the team mates,” Torino stated.
Obi’s invitation to the Super Eagles is his first in two years since he missed out on the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Obi has scored four goals and provided two assists in 18 Serie A games for Torino this season.

Thank you Lord, for this young man; Joel Obi.

  • Good news. Best of luck with SE

Can’t wait to see him play in green and white jersey again.

  • Goalkeeper Problem!
Something is just not right about goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi.
The young man has been acting with so much swag lately.
I don’t know him from Adam.
He is becoming boastful. He has promised to put his critics to shame by being named on Coach Rohr’s final list.
Is Akpeyi really good? Who is behind him?
How good is the South African league compared to Nigeria’s?
Nigeria Professional Football League might be in need of good organization, but it is way up tougher than what South Africa Football offers.
I have a problem with the way & manner the Super Eagles lost her 1st competitive match with South Africa.
To think it happened in our backyard, in a match Nigeria were in total control is suspicious.
The South Africans were confident they would win, and said so braggadociosly before the match.
It was strange, and they did win with Akpeyi in goal, a man from their own little league.
I have not stopped thinking in my head, did Akpeyi compromise his integrity leading to that duel.
Even, his body language and the way he related wit them in the tunnel before the kickoff left many speechless. I can’t take this off my head.
Now, Coach Gernot Rohr is still insisting on having him around his team. What is the problem?
Honestly, I think something is so so wrong here.
The Nff should be asking the questions & investigating our disgraceful loss to Bafana-Bafana to unravel the real reason for that trouncing.
Are there no more promising young goalkeepers in the Nigerian league?
My investigative mind has kept asking questions; I can’t shake this off my head.
Nigerian fans unanimously are saying ‘NO Russia 2018’ for Daniel Akpeyi.
    Nff please be on notice!

Daniel Akpeyi can complain for Africa. He’s never humble for a competitive and matured goalkeeper-type.

Goalkeepers are usually boastful the world over. Dan Akpeyi’s flaunt is nothing unusual. Like boxers they wish to irritate the opponent to lose control. By June we’ll see how much he’s been able to live up to his words. Luckily these days there’s TV, and every Nigerian can judge the performance of players and know the justification for selection.

Read his comment in that interview,my brothers. There is no element of pride in the young man (Akpeyi). He just said he was going to work hard to justify his invitation to Super Eagles. We don’t have to keep destroying this young man! Chelsea’s fans should have killed Courtois for his poor performance against Barcelona! We are too far away to judge who is the best in the camp.Leave Rohr to determine who is good for his program. If he impresses the coach, good and if not,let him pick who is the best. This was even the words of the young, man in the interview.Give this guy a break from all these criticism! It’s enough to destroy someone’s career!

H-man, thanks bro for seeing the truth. I have seen it a while ago and I called attention of many Nigeriaians to that but nobody cares but at the world cup, Eagles will be exposed if Akpeyi man the goal post. For sure, Akpeyi as a strong man behind him and I can guarantee you that he will make the final selection to the world cup. I read what he said about going to the world cup, Akpeyi was very confident that he will make it to the world cup. Therefore Mr. H-man, this is Nigeria. Anything can happen if you have a powerful man behind you but it is very bad while we have a lot of great goalkeepers both home and abroad but politics plays a lot in our system. Same thing happened during the Keshi’s era, he includes incompetent goalkeeper to his final selection team that went to Brazil. I couldn’t remember the goalkeeper’s name. Even, the guy went to Chan tournament and failed woefully and Nigeriaians were shouting but nothing happened in the end. I think the only thing we can do now is to keep expressing ourselves on every Nigeria sports site. Hopefully, that will help. We have Ejide, Africa Bufon, Ajiboye and some great goalkeepers both home and abroad but these people will never let them be among the team while because they don’t have strong men behind them. So painful bro but nothing we can do about it. However, I have promised myself
Before the list for both friendly matches we have for this month that, if Akpeyi was included in that list, I won’t say much about Eagles and i have no hope for Supper Eagles, which was eventually happened. Therefore, incompetent players will make it to the world cup while our best players would not. Therefore, the white people says “the truth is bitter”. I wish Super Eagles the best of luck. God bless Nigeria!!!

  • How can you guys come here and say what you don’t have proof of,if Rohr sees him as a worthy goalie u guys can’t do anything.

  • Well my people….I believe the coach has his own plan. He lead us this far and for the first tym in many years, we are beginning to show interest in super eagles’ matches.under him, we only lost once in 12-13 Matches( including Algeria, Cameroon, Zambaia And even Argentina). He has been seeking for replacements but for u people to be going back for Ejide means we lack good candidate for that role. Ejide had his bad times too. Even Ajiboye conceded the same set of goals in a match(Re-Bounds)…final of a tournament in particular and re-bound can only scored if goal keeper parries shorts to wrong places .I remembered we clamoured for goal keeper then, Uzoho came in, later Onyekuru and he was invited. Joel obi too is now invited after talks from Nigerians…and even now..he is trying to invite Jordan torunariga which I’m sure Echiejile is d main reason for that. I even heard in an interview that he’ll invite maduka okoye for the friendly against england and probably ikeme returns. So let’s wait and see what happens. This coach too is seeing all we see.

    • Precious 4 years ago

Very true Sean, I agree with u totally. That Maduka Okoye is a Nigerian, I think he will be given a chance in our next set of friendly matches. Please we should give our coach Gernot Rohr a break, he is really doing his job very well and he is also a listening coach, as Sean said we clamoured for Onyekuru(although injured) and Joel Obi and he has invited them. I believe by God’s grace we will get it right in the goalkeeping department. Soar Super Eagles

  • Gbenga 4 years ago

I wish u critically re-watch d South Africa-Nigeria match.I still can’t pick out his fault.A close range header which could have beaten any goalkeeper. We watch European football, don’t we? And d second goal? D team was down by a lone goal and everybody had gone forward to see if a dieing minute equalizer.Did u want him to call d backs back? Emma Babayaro even said Akpeyi shld have brought d South African down and pick a red card to prevent d goal.Would that have been logical, seeing 11 men found it difficult to equalize, let alone 10 against 11? And unfortunately d mix up between d referee and d assistant referee during d Argentina friendly match. Not that am soliciting for him, anyway! Amaju and other members of the NFF technical committee are there. They know more than we do.They would have definitely suggested to Rhor to drop him if there is nothing good in him.H-man was even suggesting match fixing! Ha! Ha!! U guys hate this guy! He’s enjoying his life in South Africa,u know! It’s a good experience to go to World cup,but am sure life goes on for him if he is eventually dropped. He even said he is not competing with any goalkeeper and that he will support any body chosen to wear d number 1 jersey!Happy Sunday all!

  • I believe we know that psychology plays a very big role in sports. Let me believe the coaches are trying to build Akpeyi’s confidence .Mere looking at Akpeyi:s demeanor any time he is between the post for Nigeria , all I personally see is fear and lack of confidence.
