Former assistant coach of the Super Eagles Simon Kalika has thumbed up the decision of Super Eagles goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama to continue his international career with Nigeria.
Enyeama was said to be considering his future in the Nigerian national team setup when he stated that he will “consult” with his family before deciding whether to remain a part of the team.
However, the goalkeeper who has rejoined his French club Lille has declared that he is still a Nigeria international.
Kalika who was the assistant to former Eagles coach Samson Siasia, while speaking with Completesportsnigeria.com, says Nigeria will be better for it with Enyeama still in his prime.
“Enyeama is still very good, clearly Africa’s best goalkeeper at the moment and one of the best in the world going by his World Cup performance.
“I have absolute faith in the abilities of Enyeama and he should continue as the team’s goalkeeper. Nigeria will be better for it because the country is blessed with one of the best goalkeepers in the world at the moment.
Kalika however would hope that more great goalkeepers will be produced for the national team in the nearest future.
“Enyeama is great, Enyeama is world class but it will be best to have more goalkeepers make the grade in the national team.
“There are a couple of good keepers in the Nigerian league. There is still Austin Ejide who is extremely good though has been hampered by injuries,” the Armsterdm-based Kalika further said.
Enyeama is expected to captain Nigeria now that Joseph Yobo has quit the Nigerian national team when the team kick off its qualification campaign for the 2015 African Cup of Nations.
Nigeria’s first qualifier will be against either Congo or Rwanda on 6 September 2014. Congo seems to be the likely team to face the Eagles following their 2-0 win over Rwanda in the first leg Second Round qualifying game last weekend.
