Kanu Congratulates Super Falcons On AWC Crown

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

Former Super Eagles captain and two-time African Footballer of the Year, Nwankwo Kanu, on Sunday joined the long list of eminent Nigerians who are congratulating the Nigerian women national team, the Super Falcons, on their African Women Championship triumph.

Edwin Okon’s team defeated Cameroon 2-0 on Saturday to lift the trophy for the seventh time from nine editions.

The victory is even more significant as it ensures the Falcons are one of Africa’s three representatives at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

It also marks the first time in the history of football in Africa that a men’s and women’s national team from one country are the reigning African champions.

Despite the shaky qualification campaign of the Super Eagles for Morocco 2015, the team are still the current continental kings.

“Congratulations our dear Super Falcons. African champions thanks for making us proud yesterday (Saturday) by winning the cup (AWC trophy),” ‘Papilo’, who incidentally did not win the Africa Cup of Nations despite being Nigeria’s most decorated player during his playing days, said on social media platform, Twitter.

Kanu, who captained Nigeria’s U-23 national team to the 1996 Olympics gold winning feat, won the FIFA JVC U-17 World Cup three years earlier and had numerous European club titles on his CV is the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) ambassador.

Kanu was the world’s 6th best player in 1996 as rated by FIFA after the Atlanta ’96 Olympic Games.
