Keshi, Eagles Seek AFCON Redemption

Keshi, Eagles Seek AFCON Redemption

* Set To Feast On Chad

By Izuchukwu Okosi

The Super Eagles will on Saturday hope to kick-start their 2017 African Cup of Nations qualifying games brightly when they host Chad at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna in a Group F game.

Stephen Keshi will return to the Eagles' dugout for what should be a 'routine' victory for his side.

The Eagles struggle against supposed minnows of African football during qualifying games and this is a trend Keshi will be addressing against the Chadians.

However with the disappointment of not qualifying for the 2015 AFCON finals thereby not being able to defend the title won in 2013 still fresh in the minds of Nigerian football faithful, Keshi will rally his troops to gun for a massive win.

The coach has invited a number of new players like Rabiu Ibrahim, Anderson Esiti and Kingsley Madu to the fold and they will be out to impress in front of the home crowd.

Keshi however left out key players like Mikel Obi, Osaze Odemwingie, Efe Ambrose and Emmanuel Emenike from the 15 foreign-based stars he invited for this game- which to some Nigerians, smacks of complacency.

The 'big boss' reiterated his confidence in the home-based players, eight of them making the cut for the game against Chad but it remains to be seen which of the home-based Eagles will make the starting eleven.

The team will be led by skipper Vincent Enyeama and will be joined by a few European-based stars like Ogenyi Onazi, Ahmed Musa, John Ogu, Kenneth Omeruo and Godfrey Oboabona who are already familiar with the demands of playing for the team.

The team news for Chad is shady as the team is embroiled in controversy over their kits for the game.

Completesportsnigeria.com gathered that due to the non-arrival of their kits, the visitors had to patronise a local sports wear shop in Kaduna. This is apart from the reports emanating over a bonus row in their camp.

The team had their first feel of the Ahmadu Bello Stadium Kaduna on Friday evening with fans barred from seeing the proceedings though few journalists were on duty to cover their session.

Interestingly the weather in Kaduna is seen as being of an advantage to Chad given the similar conditions the city share with their country.

This game will not be a stroll in the park but Keshi's job could be gone before it even restarts if the Eagles fail to win, and win convincingly.

The former Eagles skipper will do well to see the Ten Commandments handed to him by Nigerian football technocrats whilst speaking with Completesportsnigeria.com in an exclusive feature in May when his re-appointment was ratified by the Nigeria Football Federation.
