–Eagles coach says Villarreal star not ready to play for Nigeria
By Johnny Edward:
Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi has revealed that Villarreal striker Ikechukwu Uche wants to be ‘begged’ before he plays for the national team.
Keshi revealed that the 30-year old forward was in his plans for the Nations Cup qualifiers as he kick-starts his AFCON defence but was shocked when the former Getafe striker asked to be apologized to before donning the Eagles shirt.
“I won’t beg any player to play for me,” the 53-year old gaffer told Complete Sports.
The Eagles star was dropped from the 2014 World Cup squad after emerging as La Liga’s top scoring foreigner in Spain with 14 goals.
“He’s not bigger than the nation or the country, so why apologize to a player because he missed out on the World Cup,” Keshi stated.
It would be recalled that prior to the World Cup, Keshi had labeled Uche an indiscipline player.
“I have some players in this squad that missed the World Cup and they have not given us problems to think about.”
The quartet of Elderson Echiejile, Nosa Igiebor, Nnamdi Oduamadi and Joel Obi were part of the 30-man squad who missed out on the final 23-man squad and they are in camp for this weekend’s game against Congo.
On the preparations of his team defence of the AFCON crown they won last year, the former Togo and Mali boss told Complete Sports that they must win on Saturday to gain confidence.
“Football is played on the pitch and I want my boys to do the talking on Saturday by winning,” Keshi exclusively told Complete Sports.
“The players have approached the game with the right attitude and I am impressed. The most important thing is to sustain the tempo.”
