Keshi Reveals: Ike Uche Snubbed Nigeria Before Match Vs Congo, S/Africa

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi has revealed that he was forced to drop Ike Uche from the Super Eagles 2015 AFCON qualifiers against Congo and South Africa in September because of the attitude of the Villarreal striker.

Keshi revealed at a media briefing in Abuja on Wednesday that Uche was originally on his list of call-ups for matches against Congo and South Africa but was later forced to drop him after the player questioned why he would need a visa to South Africa.

There have been calls for Keshi to recall the skilful forward to the Nigerian national team despite the issues between both parties in the past.

Keshi has however stated that he actually put the name of Uche on his squad list for the two games against Congo and South Africa but was forced to remove his name due to the player’s indiscretion.

“Before the game against Congo, I did the list. Ike Uche’s name was on the list. He didn’t even know about it.
“Uche called me like four days later, and we spoke like brothers and that was it,” revealed Keshi.

“The next time my secretary Dayo Enebi called the players asking them if they had South African visa. He called Uche and asked him and Uche said ‘why are you asking me, what do you need that for?”

“Uche said he needed somebody to talk to him about something: that they said he was a bad kid. He did something wrong, if not… I said take his name out.

Keshi who left out the once prolific striker out of the Nigeria team from his 2014 World Cup team reiterated that he will not beg the player to represent his country.

“I am not going to beg Uche and I will not ask (assistant coach) Daniel (Amokachi) to beg Uche, for what?

“We all played for this country for 20-something years. Nobody begged us to play. We were begging to play.

“Why is it only Ike Uche? Obafemi Martins is also there, he is not saying anything.”

Keshi aparently disgusted by the frequent questions by the sports journalists over his relationship with Uche, warned that he will not respond to questions about the striker anymore.

“So, why do you guys (reporters) want to tear this team apart? Please let it be the end today. Don’t ask me about Uche. Please nobody should ask me about Uche again,” said a very furious Keshi.

“This is the last time I will speak about Ike Uche. And I do not want anybody to ask me about Ike Uche again,” the one-time Strasbourg of France defender stressed.

The Eagles are expected to depart Abuja on Thursday for Obdurman on a chattered flight ahead of the game on Saturday against Sudan.

If all what the big boss said are true. Then he should go ahead with his job. Am very sure his contract would be renewed by the new board. But if the story is otherwise, am very for the big boss o.

  • am not surprised by you keshi, I could recollect how you antagonize and actually benched adebayor when you coached Togo, infact that was one of the reason you were fired, also when you coached mali, it seems you always have problem with the best player in your team, you can not manage big players, and i could recollect you being the brain/ architect of the indiscipline in the Eagles till now, in fact it actually started when you are captain, so what are you saying.
you called someone up to ask if he has a south African visa and he asked why do i need a south African visa for, when did that became an act of indicispline that made you strike the name out.

Your comment above on the big boss was very very unfiar and i beleive if it were to be las lasgersback who droped your idol it could have been ok by you based on his colour, let us learn how to respect our own who at least equal the the record of the most successfull foreign coach in nigeria.

Na wha o! When you are not a woman, oga Keshi. How many times have we read Uche’s comments on the pages of newspapers? It is only you that keeps vituperating, not only that, just needlessly dragging Uche in the mud in order to prove a point that is not salient.

It is someone who has lost focus that keeps behaving the way you are doing.

Na only Uche dey, please Keshi talk better thing. We are fed up with Uche matter, he still dey vex say you no take am go World Cup.

From Keshi’s comments it is clear that Keshi has already resolved in his heart that Ike Uche will not play for Nigeria if he remains coach. A coach has the choice to invite the players he wants, the problem here is that Keshi has not been able to solve the goal scoring and creativity problems of the Super Eagles.

Keshi has won only 1 out of the last 12 games the Super Eagles played. If the super eagles were winning and scoring nobody will care if Ike Uche is not invited. But as it stands the Team will obviously benefit from Ike Uche’s experience , technical skill and goals. Keshi should have resolved this Uche problem a long time ago instead of fighting the player in public. It is getting very embarassing.

I have send several times I love Keshi but he is taking Nigeria in the wrong direction. Mr. Keshi needs to GO. I hope the new NFF board will recognize that the same way most Nigerians have recognized it.

Eagles do not need Uche. He is not an outstanding player. He scored no goal during the last tournament he was featured. Its not enough reason and it is ridiculous to say a coach should be dismissed because he had issue with one or two his players who are not even outstanding players in the team. Even if they are, it’s not wise decision and if NFF does that, then we have set a bad precedence.

I were Keshi, I will not have recalled Uche in the first place. I know keshi was trying to listen to the calls by some Nigerians to recall the guy. Now what are we seeing?

  • You all insulting Keshi are very stupid, you all are the reasons Nigeria always have problem, in POLITICS name it, how can one individual put the country to ramson, has he played like Drogba? Yaya Toure, those are commited Players who can turn the table around and still yet respect them coach, FIFA appreciate them, am a fan of UCHE, but i will always respect the gaffer’s decision, and if he lost, he knows the consequences, and also i hope the NFF PRESIDENT NEWLY ELECTED should remember KESHI brought us joy, and please let this man work without no interferance, PRESS MEN, you guys should be transparent, lets allow this man work, we all wanted SIASIA, WE GOT HIM, AND KESHI CAME IN we never thought he will do it, lets HISTORY, be said, he was a good leader, and he got that charisma, let who don’t want to play for him go, OBASI your PASSPORT was taken for CHAMPIONS LEAGUE in it? when you were invited against CONGO, make una leave all those things, KESHI you will prosper, and put those to shame who want you out, am just his fan, i don’t know why? God Bless you.

How many goals did this MVP Ikechukwu Uche, score at the last African cup of Nation?

  • Naijaking 7 years ago

Keshi has just lost it. First Uche was indiciplene , then Uche wants the coach, the players and Nigerians to beg him before he can consider playing for Nigeria again and now he was questioning what he need a South African Visa for. Non of these excuses add up. I like Keshi but it is beginning to look like we will be better off with someone else as Eagles coach because Keshi is taking this Uche issue too personal.

  • Toppal 7 years ago

You don’t need to look too far to recognize that it is Keshi that is making a mountain out of a mole hill. Keshi has been on this Uche’s issue since the nations cup win in South Africa. If you know that a player is irrelevant to you, then, you don’t keep talking about him. Even if journalists (because they will always do, for that is their job) bring up the players issue with you in an interview, you ignore it and move on. But when you keep rubbishing the player at any slightest opportunity, then, it can only be concluded that you have made the issue a personal one and only seeking personal vendetta against the player.

We all know that there are better ways to handle this Uche’s issue and Keshi needs not be told how!

  • @KolaUS… I think you and your adopted father need to grow up…. At every slightest opportunity, he takes a dig at the poor boy and for how long will you and your father, Keshi will continue to whine about Uche. It is a known fact that Uche will never play under Keshi again not because the boy does not want to but because Keshi will not invite him. Even if he Keshi invites Uche to camp, my candid advice to Uche is for him to decline the invitation becasue the Keshi that I know would have laced the camp with dangerous landmines that the atmosphere will not be healthy for the boy to thrive. So all this Uche did this and that are demo….. Anyways, Keshi’s reign will be over soon.
As for you blind follower, KolaUS, I’m not surprised at your language.. Omo ori eni, ti nwon ba gbe so ri bed, jabo. With all your years in US, civilization is still far from you. I wonder how you relate with your children.
