KING OF CLAY: Nadal Sees Off Thiem To Win 11th French Open Title

Clay court specialist Rafael Nadal of Spain made light work of Austria’s Dominic Thiem as he won in three straight sets to retain his men’s French Open singles title on Sunday.

Nadal who featured in his 11th French Open final against Thiem, 24, and his 24th Grand Slam final overall, won the one-sided final 6-4, 6-3 and 6-2 to clinch a record 11th title at Roland Garros.

He has now won a total of 17 Grand Slam titles in his career while it was Thiem’s first Grand Slam final appearance.

Prior to Sunday’s final, Thiem was the only man to defeat Nadal on clay in the last two years in 2017 in Rome and Madrid in 2018.

For his effort, Nadal pick up the cash prize of €2.2 million as the men’s champion.

In the women’s final played on Saturday, Romania’s Simona Halep ended her quest for a first ever Grand Slam title by beating America’s Sloane Stephens.

Halep came from a set down to win two sets to one to end a run of three Grand Slam finals heartaches.
