Klopp Regrets Thin Liverpool Squad, Relishes Top Four Battle

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that the club's summer transfer plans have begun at the club.

Speaking on Friday during his press conference ahead of Monday night's Premier League game against Watford, Klopp said: "We are not surprised when Mane is sidelined, Lallana is sidelined, Henderson is sidelined, Sturridge is sidelined – we are not surprised about this (lack of depth of the bench).

"It was unlucky that all at the same moment we cannot use them. We still could have won the game (against Crystal Palace), that’s how it is. We will learn, we are working on strengthening the squad, that’s clear.

"We can’t create a situation where great players can’t play any time. We had to create a squad for this season.

"The average age of the bench (last weekend) was 19.2 – not too experienced. With too many injuries we’ve had some problems."

The Reds currently occupy third place in the Premier League, a point ahead of fourth-placed Manchester City, who have the same cushion over local rivals Manchester United in fifth. Both teams have a game in hand.

Klopp is relishing the challenge he and his team face as they attempt to secure a return to Europe's top table.

"I think when we met here months ago at the beginning of the season, when we were first or second in the table and all that stuff, I said the only thing we can do is to be in the battle for the interesting positions at the end of the season," he added.

"The end of the season is now, of course, it is the last month of the season and we are in the battle. So what else do we want?

"Yes, it would be nice if we had 10 points more and fight with Chelsea for the title, but that’s not for us obviously in this moment.

"So we have to fight for what we can fight for and that’s a Champions League place. That’s really, really interesting, to be honest."

The former Borussia Dortmund coach also dismissed suggestions that the pressure Liverpool now face is anything but a positive.

He added: "Is there more pressure? No! It’s the pressure you create by your performances and if we would have now 50-something points we would fight for nothing.

"Without pressure, playing football then, you would ask do we already plan the season? Yes, we do, but still concentrate and focus on this season.

"In this moment, three or four days before the game, it is only positive, there's nothing else.

"Will there come pressure? Yeah, of course, on Monday before the game, nobody will feel like it is a friendly game, it's a very important game.

"We need to be ready for this but we were often enough ready for this so nobody should be in doubt that we fight there or whatever. In this moment, everything for us is possible, and that’s what we should try to show."
