Lam Targeting New Era With Wigan

New Wigan Warriors head coach Adrian Lam is hoping to see in a new era with the reigning Super League champions.

Lam was confirmed as Shaun Wane’s successor ahead of the 2019 season and he certainly has big shoes to fill, as Wane guided the Warriors to three Grand Final successes during his seven years with the club, including this year’s triumph over Warrington Wolves.

The 48-year-old will only be in charge of Wigan for one season before Shaun Edwards takes over ahead of the 2020 campaign, but he is looking forward to seeing in a new dawn at the DW Stadium. “Shaun Wane has done an amazing job but this is a new start,” Lam told Wigan Today.

“I’m looking forward to getting them to a new level. That’s the exciting part for the players. “The challenge for me is to maintain where they’re at, and then take them forward.”

Lam certainly thinks he can improve Wigan despite their success last season, although he knows it will be a challenge, as Wane was not the only high-profile departure from the club, as a number of his coaching team, as well as players such as Sam Tomkins and John Bateman, have also left.

“I watched them (last season) and while they were successful I think they can be better. They were resilient but I think their attack can be better,” Lam added. “They’ve lost key staff and some experienced players.

“So it’s a new era for the club, and I’m fortunate to be a part of that and hopefully we can stamp our own approval in time.”
