Lara Wants Olympic Cricket

Former West Indies captain Brian Lara has called for cricket to be added to the Olympic schedule. There has been a big debate over recent years on the addition of potential sports to the Olympic programme, with Skateboarding, Sport Climbing, Surfing and Karate all debuting at Tokyo 2020.

Golf returned to the Olympics in 2016 – Justin Rose going on to win the gold medal – and there have now been calls for some form of cricket to be allowed into the world’s biggest sporting event.

Lara, who is one of the greatest batsmen of all time after ending his career with 11,953 Test runs, believes Twenty20 would fit perfectly and he hopes to see his beloved sport given a chance.

Speaking in a chat session in New York as part of the Cricket World Cup 2019 Trophy Tour, hosted by Nissan, he said: “The T20 format lasts just 3 hours so I don’t see why it can’t be included in the Olympics. It was nice to see golf get that opportunity again, it’s time for cricket now!”
