Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles has praised team-mate Federico Fernandez, describing the defender as a “top centre-half”. Former Argentina international Fernandez arrived at St James’ Park this summer from Swansea City on a two-year deal, reuniting with manager Rafael Benitez whom he played under at Napoli.
The 29-year-old has made four Premier League appearances and he produced an impressive performance last time out as the Magpies drew 0-0 against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
Lascelles, who has had his injury problems already in this campaign, has been speaking about his new team-mate, with the skipper praising Fernadez’s ability.
“Feddy is a top centre-half. He is experienced, he’s played in the Premier League for a long time, and you can really tell with how he plays,” he said. “His covering, his positioning, everything is spot on. When balls go in behind, he knows when to react.
“We work well together and really bounce off each other quite well. He’s vocal, like me, and if we play like we did against Palace most weeks, we’ll do very well defensively.”
