Riyad Mahrez was the match winner as Leicester City continued their fairytale run at the top of the Barclays Premier League table on Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 win against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Leicester are now eight points clear of second-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who have a game in hand.


Riyad Mahrez was through on goal in the 19th minute but his shot from the six-yard box was cleared by Wayne Hennessey.

Leicester then scored in the 34th minute of the game through Mahrez. Jamie Vardy produced a great pass which found Mahrez inside the penalty area.

The Algerian took advantage of the situation to fire into the bottom right corner.

Yannick Bolasie could have made it 1-1 three minutes later when who got inside the penalty area and sent a powerful shot that almost ended inside the net. The keeper Kasper Schmeichel was alert and made a good save.

With 19 minutes left on the clock, Bakary Sako wasted a huge opportunity to level for Crystal Palace. The fans already began to celebrate as he produced a shot from the edge of the box after a brilliant solo effort. The ball went towards the bottom right corner, but Kasper Schmeichel made an astonishing save.

Bakary Sako in the 83rd minute connected with a pass around the edge of the box, aimed and struck. His attempt went towards the underside of the crossbar, but Kasper Schmeichel Leicester was alert and didn’t let the score change.

Damien Delaney smashed a volley from near the penalty spot without any hesitation, but it only rattled the crossbar. No equaliser for Palace.

Crystal Palace remained in 15th place with 33 points while Leicester at the top, now have 66 points.

At the Hawthorns it ended 1-0 in favour of Norwich City against the home side, West Bromwich Albion.

The West Brom-Norwich City game produced no shot on goal in the first half.

Robbie Brady broke the deadlock five minutes after the break, when he latched on to a precise pass deep inside the box, which was sent by Matthew Jarvis. The forward then beat the goalkeeper with a low shot into the middle of the goal.

Patrick Bamford produced an ambitious shot as he found himself in a great position after collecting a precise pass inside the penalty area but it did not trouble the goalkeeper.

The scoreline remained that way until the end of the game despite six minutes of added time.
