Leicester Pip Newcastle, Restore 5 Point Lead; Benitez In Losing Debut

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

Leicester City continued their amazing run in the Barclays Premier League as they defeated Newcastle United who had Rafa Benitez taking charge of the Toons for the first time 1-0 on Monday night at the King Power Stadium.

Newcastle's Ayoze Perez had the first chance to score in the game but he fired his shot wide from close range within two minutes.

Jamie Vardy went down under a challenge from Daryl Jamaart, but the referee failed to award a penalty in the 15th minute.

Leicester scored in the 25th minute through Shinji Okazaki who showed great determination to get to the ball inside the box from a Riyad Mahrez freekick and produced a great acrobatic scissors kick to leave Rob Elliot helpless.

Mark Albrighton went close to making it 2-0 as he got to the edge of the box and fired a shot that went inches wide of the right post.

Moussa Sissoko lost what was probably Newcastle United's best chance to equalise in the 57th minute.

Presented with a chance to shoot at goal, the French international of African extraction opted to pass to a teammate but the Toons eventually lost the ball possession as the alert Leicester defence cleared their lines.

The Foxes are now five points clear at the top of the table with 63 points.
