Lenagan Hails ‘inspirational’ Wigan Appointment

Wigan chairman Ian Lenagan has described Shaun Edwards as an “inspirational figure” after he agreed to coach the Warriors from 2020.

After Shaun Wane announced that he would be leaving Wigan at the end of the season to join Scotland Rugby Union later this year, there has been mounting speculation as to who the Super League giants would turn to as his replacement.

Despite his ties with Wales Rugby Union, Edwards has agreed to switch codes and return to Wigan at the end of his contract following the conclusion of the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

Another ex-Warriors star, Adrian Lam, will take charge at the end of this season as interim coach until Edwards makes the switch for the 2020 Super League campaign.

Speaking after the announcement, the chairman was understandably delighted with the appointments, particularly with the addition of Edwards, which many see as a real coup.

Lenagan said: “He is a legendary figure in both codes of rugby as a supremely gifted player and as a highly successful coach. He is an inspirational figure, a born leader and a winner at everything he has turned his attention to.”

Meanwhile, Wales Rugby Union chairman Gareth Davies added: “He is a rugby league legend and particularly so at Wigan and we know he will be welcomed back there with open arms.

“Shaun has and continues to be a great servant to Welsh rugby. He has been part of a hugely successful coaching team over the past 10 years and we would like to thank him for all of his efforts.”
