Liverpool Held By Southampton, Falter In Top Four Race

Liverpool failed to score against Southampton for the fourth time this season after playing out a goalless draw against the Saints who failed to register a shot on target in their Premier League encounter at Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds who have also failed to beat Southampton in all three league meetings since Jurgen Klopp became their manager, drawing two and losing one prior to Sunday’s encounter, began the game in a brilliant manner by piling pressure on the Southampton defence.

The result took Liverpool to third place on 70 points, one more than fourth-placed Manchester City, who have one game in hand.

Philippe Coutinho created the first real chance at goal but his shot from outside the box was saved by Fraser Forster in the 24th minute.

Ten minutes later Roberto Firmino also fired a right footed shot from outside the box which was saved in the bottom left corner by Forster again.
Emre Can also came close to breaking the deadlock with three minutes left to play in the first half.

In the second half, Liverpool mounted more pressure on the Saints’ defence as James Milner, Can and Firmino all came close to scoring.

But in the 64th minute, Southampton’s Jack Stephens conceded a penalty, handling the ball in the penalty area but Milner failed to capitalise on the opportunity, firing in a right footed shot which was saved by Forster diving low to the bottom left corner.
