Ruthless Reds to host Mourinho’s men in the week of January 19 2015
Liverpool have drawn Chelsea in the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup while Tottenham will play Sheffield United in the other semi-finals.
The first leg will be played in the week of January 19, with the second leg a week later.
Chelsea defeated Derby County 3-1 on Tuesday while Liverpool crushed Bournemouth by the scoreline yesterday to book the titanic confrontation.
In Wednesday’s game,Liverpool’s Premier League quality shone through as they saw off the Championship high-fliers.
A Raheem Sterling double and a Lazar Markovic strike put the visitors 3-0 ahead before the Cherries pulled one back through former Everton man Dan Gosling.
Although in the end Brendan Rodgers’ side breezed into the semi-finals of the competition, things could have been much tighter but for some poor finishing from the Championship side.
Calum Wilson should have put the Seasiders ahead within the first five minutes, but after wriggling through a crowd of bodies he somehow screwed his effort wide when it seemed easier to score.
England ace Sterling showed him how to do it in the 20th minute, when he found space in the area to head home Jordan Henderson’s knock-down.
Liverpool doubled their lead seven minutes later when Markovic cooly steered home from just inside the area after good work down the left from Philippe Coutinho.
Bournemouth should have pulled one back on the half-hour mark, but striker Yann Kermorgan’s shot from the edge of the six-yard box sailed over the bar with the goal gaping.
Once again, the visitors made them pay, although they had to wait until the 51st minute to do so when Sterling bagged his second following a swift counter-attack.
