Louis Van Gaal maintains his side can still win the title this season but has warned his players they are not yet guaranteed a Champions League spot.
Saturday’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford made it five consecutive league victories and moved the Red Devils up to third in the table above neighbours Manchester City who play Crystal Palace tonight.
Van Gaal’s men sit eight points behind leaders Chelsea while their result, coupled with Liverpool’s 4-1 loss to Arsenal, means they boast a similar gap to the Reds in fifth.
United welcome Manchester City to Old Trafford next Sunday before travelling to Chelsea while they face Arsenal on the penultimate weekend of the season.
And Van Gaal believes the fact they have to play their rivals means anything can happen, including Liverpool mounting a comeback to snatch fourth place.
“We have to play against the first three in the league (Chelsea, City and Arsenal) and normally when you play against better teams with more points it’s not done yet,” Van Gaal said.
“We are looking up and we have to win every week but anything is possible.
“We have made a big gap to fifth and we can suffer a defeat.
“Liverpool is now eight points behind us and we are eight points behind Chelsea. We probably won’t be champions but we can give pressure.”Copyright © 2020 Completesports.com All rights reserved.
