Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes says the players were spurred on against Man City by the recent criticism of boss Bruno Genesio. The French side were major underdogs heading to the home of the English champions on Wednesday night on Matchday 1 of the Champions League but somehow emerged victorious.
First-half strikes from Maxwel Cornet and Nabil Fekir put Les Gones in complete control at the interval and despite Bernardo Silva pulling one back for the Citizens, Genesio’s side hung on for a 2-1 win.
The shock nature of the result was made all the more surprising given Lyon’s mixed start to the season in Ligue 1, winning two of their first five matches, being held to a 2-2 draw at home by Caen last weekend.
Genesio’s position has come under scrutiny as a result of their struggles and Lopes says the players are glad to show they are 100 per cent behind the coach with their win at City.
“We came here a little off colour,” Lopes told RMC Sport. “We wanted to try to find ourselves.
“There are beautiful things that can happen to us. Genesio was criticised, sometimes unjustly.
“We managed to get out all we had in us this evening. We proved that Lyon are always a threat. We all did it for the coach, who was a bit in trouble.”Fastest Paying Betting Site in Nigeria: Grab your 140% First Time Deposit Bonus Now — www.Sportybet.Com Copyright © 2021 Completesports.com All rights reserved.
