Former Super Eagles striker Ayodele Makinwa has hung his boots and stopped playing active football, completesportsnigeria.com reports.

The former Palermo and Lazio forward told Completesportsnigeria.com in an exclusive interview that his recurring knee injury forced him to quit his last club Nova Gorica in Slovenia.

“Football was not fun for me anymore because of the knee injury I copped early in my career,” the former Super Eagles striker told completesportsnigeria.com.

“I was only playing matches with Gorica but I could not train as my knees were always swollen.”

Makinwa who was on the verge of joining Italian giants Inter Milan from Parlemo in the 2004-2005 season added that he had no regrets whatsoever in his  career which spanned 12 years.

“The immeasurable feat I achieved with Atalanta and Parlemo remains ever green but winning the Coppa Italia with Lazio was great too,” he added.

Makinwa also revealed he is already a football scout.

“Nothing will ever completely replace playing the game I love, however I feel like I’m starting a new adventure and I’m genuinely excited about what lies ahead.”

On the international stage, Makinwa made 18 appearances and scored two goals.

Makinwa who turns 32 in July said Nigeria’s inability to qualify for the 2006 World Cup in Germany was a big disappointment for him.

Makinwa began his career with FC Ebiedei before joining Reggina. He played for Lazio, Palermo, Chievo and Atalanta in Italy.
