A Sergio Aguero hat-trick and a solitary goal from Kelechi Iheanacho ensured Manchester City kicked off their UEFA Champions League campaign on a winning note as they defeated Borussia Monchengladbach 4-0 in their rescheduled tie at the Etihad on Wednesday.
Nigeria forward Iheanacho, who was introduced in place of Aguero with just 10 minutes left, scored City’s fourth goal after Aguero’s hat-trick had put the hosts 3-0 up.
Iheanacho’s goal was his second in four days after the Super Eagles youngster scored the opener in the 2-1 Premier League win over Manchester United on Saturday.
The win was Pep Guardiola’s seventh straight victory since taking over at City, making him the first coach in history to win his first seven matches at a new club, according to Opta.
City went close in the sixth minute through Kevin De Bruyne who sent in two crosses in quick succession.
In the 8th minute Aguero pit City 1-0 ahead after he steered home Aleksandar Kolarov low cross at the near post.
Ilkay Gundogan almost doubled city’s lead in the 11th minute from a counter but Yann Sommer in goal for Monchengladbach made a fine save.
City went 2-0 up on 27 minutes through Aguero who converted from the penalty spot after Christoph Krammer tripped Gundogan in the 18-yard box.
In the 39th minute, Monchengladbach made the first change with Krammer going off for Julian Korb.
Aguero had a chance to grab his hat-trick on 60 minutes but Sommer made a save.
City almost added to their 2-0 lead through Raheem Sterling off De Bruyne’s pass but Sommer deflected his effort away for a corner.
Aguero finally completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute after he rounded Sommer before slotting the ball into the net.
City made substitutions with the trio of Iheanacho, Gael Clichy and Leroy Sane replacing Aguero, Sterling and Gundogan.
And on the stroke of full time, Iheanacho made it 4-0 after slamming the ball home from close range.Fastest Paying Betting Site in Nigeria: Grab your 140% First Time Deposit Bonus Now — www.Sportybet.Com Copyright © 2021 Completesports.com All rights reserved.
