Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has been analysing their Sunday’s Premier League opponents, Manchester City and he believes that Pep Guardiola’s team has been successful this season due to the manager’s competence and the huge mmoney the club splashed out in the transfer window.
After failing to win a trophy in his debut season in England, Pep Guardiola sanctioned the signing of Danilo (Real Madrid), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur), Benjamin Mendy (AS Monaco), Bernardo Silva (AS Monaco) and Ederson (Benfica).
With their activity during the summer transfer, City are currently top in the league table on 75 points, 16 points ahead of second place Manchester United.
Last Sunday, City outclassed Arsenal 3-0 to win the Carabao Cup .
And in the UEFA Champions League, they are almost through into the quarter-finals after thrashing Basel 4-0 away in the first-leg in round 16.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s trip to the Etihad in their Premier League clash, Conte posited praised Guardiola for what he has done so far with the Manchester-based club.
“I think last season Man City, it was always a fantastic team,” Conte said in his pre-match press conference.
“After one season, the manager tried to improve the quality of the starting XI. This is the result.
“I think we must have a great admiration for this team.
“Because they are doing and they are having a fantastic path in this season.
“It’s very difficult to find a weakness in this team. I think that when you work very well, and there’s great feeling between the manager and the club, you can work the way you want. They have the possibility to spend a lot of money. when you link the two situations: a good manager, money to spend and the same ambition, this is the final result.
“For sure, they have the opportunity to spend money, to improve the starting XI and improve the squad.
“I always say, for the other teams, they have to pay great attention to Man City. When there is competence and money to spend, one plus one is two, not three, four, five.
“No [not a worry about them], every club has to understand the target for the club. I think every team must have their own target before the season and try to reach this.
“For us, in this moment, we have to try to get a place in the Champions League.
“It won’t be easy, there are many teams that are very strong, we must be very ready to fight.”
Conte gave injury updates on the quartet of Tiemoue Bakayoko, David Luiz, Ethan Ampadu and Ross Barkley.
“The injuries are always the same. Bakayoko and Luiz. Ampadu also,” he said.
“Ross Barkley this week he trained with us.
“Now he recovered from his injury. He will come with us for Man City.
“I don’t know whether I find a place for him in the bench or the stand for another week.”
And on Alvaro Morata who was a shadow of himself in the 2-1 loss to Manchester United last weekend:”He has to work and to recover the best form.
“After an injury in his back, he has to have patience, we must have patience, the only way is to work.”
