Man United Vs West Brom: Rooney Passed Fit To Play

Louis van Gaal has confirmed Wayne Rooney will be fit for Manchester United’s clash with West Brom on Saturday.

The United captain suffered a knee injury late in last Sunday’s 3-0 defeat at Everton and was considered a doubt for their upcoming Premier League fixture at Old Trafford.

“Rooney is fit to play, it was not so heavy as we expected,” Van Gaal told MUTV.

“Wayne is very important for us, so I am very happy. [Phil] Jones is fit but we have to see his match rhythm, of course. But [Luke] Shaw has trouble with his groin so he cannot play.”

Robin van Persie stepped up his recovery from an ankle injury he suffered in February by scoring twice for United’s Under-21s side on Monday evening, and Van Gaal has revealed the Dutch striker is in contention to feature against West Brom.

“He played 80 minutes, and I think that’s good,” said the United boss.

When you score two goals also, it gives a boost for the confidence of Robin. He can play but we have to wait and see if I let him play, of course.”

Meanwhile, Jonny Evans has been ruled out due to a sciatic nerve problem.
“It is unbelievable,” said Van Gaal.

“For six weeks he had nothing and he could not play or participate in the selection [due to suspension] and then he had an injury. It is unbelievable, but it is true,” said Van Gaal.
