Wigan Warriors star Dom Manfredi says he came close to quitting the game after suffering two serious knee injuries in two years. The 25-year-old will step out in Saturday’s Grand Final when Wigan take on Warrington Wolves, something he thought he may never get the chance to do following his injury nightmare.
“I’ll be honest, I was ready to give up a few times and that was the lowest point I had got to,” he said.
“But I said to myself that ‘I need to give it one last go’ and throw everything at it and if it didn’t work out for me then at least I could say to myself ‘I’ve tried’ but here we are.
“I could have thrown the towel in – but I just put the hard work in. My time out was mentally tough as well, so I had to get over the mental side of it and that has got me to where I am today.”
Manfredi has played the last four games and will now get the chance to banish the memories of the last two years.
“To be honest, I didn’t think I would get to run out at all this year in a Wigan shirt, so to be in the Grand Final at Old Trafford is massive,” he added.
