Eliaquim Mangala ‘s surprise inclusion in the 25-man Man City squad has left the door ajar for a possible new deal. The central defender is in the final stages of his recovery from the knee injury he suffered whilst out on loan at Everton back in February.
It was a cruel blow for Mangala, who was hoping his displays for the Toffees would also put him in the shop window, with less than 12 months now remaining on his deal at City.
Mangala, however, has received encouraging signs he could yet still have a future under Pep Guardiola, who included him in his 25-man squad list he submitted to the Premier League on Tuesday afternoon.
The Citizens certainly aren’t enthused by the prospect of not receiving a fee for a player who cost them £32million when they swooped to land him from Porto back in 2014.
Mangala failed to establish himself as a first-team regular and was forced to spend a season on loan at Valencia in 2017, before rejecting a £20m move to Crystal Palace last summer.
The powerful 27-year-old, however, proved himself to Guardiola during the first half of last year’s campaign, playing enough to earn himself a Premier League winners medal and a Carabao Cup gong.
Mangala remains a popular figure in the City dressing room and has been very appreciative of the help and support he has received from the club during the last 12 months, which could yet see him sitting down to discuss possible new terms.
