Rejected Super Eagles forward Obafemi Martins has been voted into the Major League Soccer (MLS) All-Star Fan X1 team that will play against reigning European club kings,Bayern Munich in an exhibition game on August 8 at Providence Park in Portland.
Martins, 29, is making his All-Star debut after joining the Sounders last season. According to the team, he won his place in the All-Star Fan XI by winning a video-game contest in which fans — playing as Martins — scored more goals than any other player in EA Sports’ “FIFA 14.” In the real world, Martins ranks sixth in the MLS with eight goals and is one of just three players with at least six goals and six assists.
Also voted for the game are two other players from Seattle Sounders-Clint Dempsey and DeAndre Yedlin. Dempsey, 31, was an MLS All-Star in 2005 and 2006 when he was with the New England Revolution, and now repeats as a Sounder after joining the club last fall. Despite
playing in just 10 games so far this MLS season, Dempsey is tied for fifth in the league with nine goals, including one in Seattle’s victory Sunday over Portland.
Yedlin, 21, will make his second MLS All-Star appearance since debuting with the Sounders last season.
Martins,Dempsey and Yedlin will join eight other MLS All-Stars to compete against the German soccer club who sent 14 of its players to the World Cup in Brazil, more than any other team.
Martins will feature in a three man forward line up which also includes Thierry Henry and Landon Donovan in 4-3-3 formation.
