Seattle Sounders forward Obafemi Martins copped a groin injury as seven-man Sounders lost 3-1 in the fourth round of the of the U.S. Open Cup to their bitter rivals, the Portland Timbers at Starfire Stadium according to the Seattle Times.
Martins who was named in the MLS player of the week for week 15 following his heroics restored parity for the four-time and defending Open Cup champions in the 85th but could not continue as he was stretchered off,reducing Seattle to nine players with no substitutes left.
Seattle coach Sigi Schmid however confirmed that the 32 year old forward who underwent a surgery to correct his broken nose a forthnight ago will undergo an MRI scan to ascertain the level of injury.
It was Sounders first loss in 17 U.S. Open Cup games at Starfire stadium since joining MLS in 2009.
The former Levante forward remains highly unlikely to feature in Saturday's MLS match when the San Jose Earthquakes visit CenturyLink Field.
