Martins Injured, Out For Up To Seven Months

Nigeria striker Obafemi Martins will be out of action for up to seven months with a torn hamstring, his Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua have announced.

Martins, 33, was taken off early with the injury during Shanghai Shenhua’s clash against Kashima Antlers in the Asian Champions League on Tuesday.

The former Inter Milan striker was carried off midway through the first half of the match which ended 2-2 and Shenhua announced on their official website on Wednesday that he is out long-term.
Martins, who was tipped to be involved with the Super Eagles for the Russia 2018 World Cup, had scored a hat-trick for Shanghai on Saturday in their 4-2 CSL win over Hebei China Fortune.

Any hopes Martins had of forcing his way into the Nigeria World Cup squad are now over with the global competition just two months away.

The Super Eagles are facing a mini striker crisis with the team’s only centre forward Odion Ighalo, also based in China, misfiring in their last two friendlies against Poland and Serbia.

Nigeria will face Croatia, Iceland and Argentina in Group D at the World Cup.

  • Oh what a loss!!!

  • Makes no difference, he was never going to be in the World Cup squad

this is serious headache for rohr and all nigerians…martins would have been the solution to our attack but awoniyi, dessers or adi can be tried…we have no choice…get well soon obagoal

  • Ĺet dem bring him here .only 2wèeks treatment we do

Same thing has happened to Martins in 2010 world cup and he worked so hard and he made the squad. So, this time around won’t be exceptional. However, i wish him a speedy recovery. God bless Nigeria!!!

So sad the end of my dream attacking line-up for the super eagles to the World cup come june this year. We’ll have to look the way of Brown Ideye but I cannot bet on him although he supports the attack so well and has great work rate and assist. He is good during counter attacks and hardly gives away possession except when used as top striker. If played behind a top striker he can also be of immerse benefit to the team. If you recall he was a part of the starting line-up when Nigeria beat Zambia away during the first game of the world cup qualifiers africa zone. Ideye can also play behind Ighalok

    • What a loss. I had a lengthy coversation with Mr. Rohr today on calling Martins and he kinda agreed to invite him. He is such a great prayer I cherish and would like him to be in the world cup

      • @Tols, Really? If you’re not just dropping a name, then you can chip in a word with Rohr to get a top striker ASAP. There are many to choose from: Adi, Dessers, Onuachi etc. We need someone to give Ighalo the run for his money. The strike force in the present SuperEagles is very docile and will not survive the shock waves in that group.

This is extremely regrettable and a loss for Nigeria at a time we needs his services most. Rohr should now look up to Adi, or Dessers or Paul Onuachu for that striker’s position. Forget about Ighalo completely. We can not say that enough.

  • @Achi. Yes, I did talk to him. Out of those strikers you mentioned, Dessers style of play is the best from their youtube video I watched but sorry to say, I can’t vouch for any because of the leagues they are playing. They may fizzle out if they see great defenders. Paul Onuachu and Fernando Adi are too lanky and look somehow slow to me. Ighalo will convert the kind of chances they are getting in attack. I feel both and even dessers always depend on passes from other players before they can score. And you remember, Fernando Adi has been invited by Siasia and Rohr before. I was able to talk about Martins because he has been tested and performed well in different leagues and even the super eagles and still playing well. He is a player that can take on defenders and support the midfield if they are not playing well. He also has a good aggression and good fighting spirit. I would have wished all these players to be tested before now. The tall guy (forgot his name) Keshi invited for 2014 world cup that was scoring great goals in Belgium flopped at big stage in the world cup.

  • I just informed him about Dessers though. Like his style somehow.

    • @Tols. Great. Good to work as a team and apply all the diplomacy we can muster to strengthen the SuperEagles, chiseling it into a potent strike/defence unit. I think whatever grudges Nigerians/NFF have against Ejide should be forgiven so he can be brought back into the fold. He is doing well in his club right now. He is very good on one-to-one situations. In all honesty, I don’t think Uzoho is experienced enough to stop the likes of roving warriors like Messi or Mo Salah.

@Achi, what about me? Tell your friend Tols to recommend me to Rohr. I can play in the defence, midfield and attack at the same time!

      • @Achi, yeah true. He told me Dessers is a good option. Don’t be surprised if you see him in the next friendly

    • Bomboy 3 years ago

@Tols, I am enjoying your joke.

      • @Bomboy. @Tols. Had a good laugh!!! Tols got me, like the jab AJ threw at JP. Shows we really care for a good outcome in Russia. Anyway, I stand by my suggestions, joke or not.

      • @Bombay, no Joke man. Power of communication

  • Sad to hear about this but I’m happy will are gonna have some rest from those clamouring for him to be included in the SE squad. I personally think he has nothing to offer us at his age simple

  • ojo samuel 3 years ago

lol…tols baba! well it is great for the super eagles if you truly are doing this job…if true, a big thanks to you…

I just hope martins recover before the world cup…I am satisfied with uzoho for now

I will never doubt anyone tho, looking at the way technology is connecting people!!It is 99% possible he spoke to him.. yA all can imagine..There is voice over ip..whereby you can chat or call someone even without having his mob number!!!ever since Gernot Rohr was the coach of Gabon national team he has been on mY Facebook friends list but sincerely speaking i don’t really believe in recommending any player to a coach..they know what they want and they even have people that get paid for monitoring players for them…

He is out for seven months so Broda use ur wishes wisely_ besides I have washed Martins in his heydays playing for Newcastle and d Eagle’s all I see is a similar mould of ighalo, running for most times he is on the pitch without getting much done until we run out of hope and also running out of the 90″ then he sees the board for a change @ 84″ claps in d air (even wen we r a goal down) and runz off to d bench >>case study: Nigeria vs Ghana afcon semifinals….
