Australia coach Bert van Marwijk is disappointed the Socceroos could not hold out for a draw in their opening game against France at the 2018 FIFA World Cuo in Kazan on Saturday.
France kicked off their campaign by defeating Australia 2-1 with Paul Pogba scoring the match winner nine minutes from time after Miles Jedinak had cancelled out Antoine Griezmann’s strike from the spot
“I’m disappointed because I think we deserved a point,” Marwijk said during his post-match interview.
“We can be proud of the way we played against one of the best teams in the world.
“Just before the 2-1 Juric could make the situation and there’s a tackle on him where they get a yellow card and the chance is gone.”
Australia’s captain Jedinak also echoed his coach’s thoughts after the game.
“We’re disappointed, we didn’t have the luck today. The second goal was fortunate for them, just over the line. We’ve got to take the positives, pick ourselves up and go again,” he said.
“We knew we had to be right at it from the first whistle, maintaining discipline and focus. We got ourselves back into the game, we felt good. Then they got the goal, we gave it a go but it was not enough.
“I told my teammates that if we maintain that structure and concentration we showed today, let’s see where it gets us. I can’t fault them, almighty effort today.”
Australia will face Denmark in their next game on Thursday looking to record their first win.
