Mascherano: Why Argentina Lost To ‘Physically Superior’ Super Eagles

Mascherano: Why Argentina Lost To ‘Physically Superior’ Super Eagles

By Adeboye Amosu: Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano has blamed the team’s poor second half display for their 4-2 defeat in Tuesday’s friendly game against the Super Eagles of Nigeria, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

The Albiceleste dominated proceedings in the first half and led 2-0 at a point in the game before the Super Eagles rallied back to win the contest.

Mascherano who was also widely criticised for his poor showing in the encounter played at the Krasnodar Stadium, Russia also insisted that the South Americans failed to match their opponent physical strength in the game.

Although the Super Eagles displayed impressive technical ability, including Alex Iwobi’s brilliant nutmeg of Mascherano in the lead up to Nigeria’s fourth goal, the Argentina midfielder only commented on Nigeria’s physical play.

“We did well in the first half, but in the second half there was no intensity in our game,” the Barcelona player told tycsports.com.

“They (Super Eagles) are a very strong team and were physically superior. They just passed us over in the second half.

“We disconnected from the game and it was difficult to come back into the after their goals.”

Ever Banega and Sergio Aguero scored two quick goals for Argentina in the first half, while Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho led Nigeria’s revival by grabbing a goal late in the first half.

Alex Iwobi (brace) and Brian Idowu also hit the back of the net for Gernot Rohr’s men in the game.

In 2012 when we beat Argentina 4-1 in Abuja, I remember the same Mascherano complained about the quality of the pitch and the bad food they ate. Yesterday on the neutral ground of Krasnodar, Russia he’s complaining about “physical superiority.” It’s not our fault that we have bigger men in the Super Eagles. In spite of our giants, Argentina were 2 goals up, and I think the turn around was more of technical brilliance rather than physical superiority.

Nigerians players use their brain not physical meanwhile there countries bigger than Nigerians in size but they can’t play like us. Your legend Maradona used drug to play against us in 1994 but you don’t talk about that one.

Has anyone noticed always all of the time white people or Europeans
usually talk about physical play when any African team or any predominantly black team beat them in sports especially in soccer? They never say anything about our technical ability because of course that requires mental ability which they don’t expect from any black man. So, Argentina, we’re strong physicality and technically better than you that’s why we came back in the second half to demolish you. There you have it.

Please kindly inform the technical crew of Nigeria super eagles our defense line need to be properly taking care of balogun and ekong because it shows weakness with d quality of dybala and aguero so is either balogun buckle up or been replace by omeruo BC Kenneth omeruo has played in the world cup before so he has good experience.

Has anyone noticed that Nigeria play better against non-African oppositions? This is another clear case. Fair officiating, good pitch, and more refined tactical approach from the opposing teams enable the Super Eagles play their real game. I hope they improve on this good form as we head to Russia. God bless Nigeria.
