Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano has announced his retirement from international football following the country’s elimination from the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
La Albiceleste were defeated 4-3 by France in their second round fixture in Kazan on Saturday.
The former Barcelona of Spain star featured in all Argentina games in the competition.
The 34-year-old could not help as Lionel Messi and Co were beaten 4-3 by France in the last-16.
“This whole story is over. From now on I will be a fan of the team. We gave everything until the end,” he said amid tears and disappointment after the game.
“It was a crazy game where we did not start well, we recovered and we turned it around, but the equalising goal from them hurt us a lot.
“We do not have anything to reproach ourselves for, and when that happens, that’s it, when you go empty, you have to accept that the rival is better and everything is over, I hope in the future these guys can achieve something great.”
The 34-year-old was capped 147 times by the country and scored three goals.Copyright © 2020 Completesports.com All rights reserved.
