McCarthy Handed England Call-Up

Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has been named in England’s squad for next month’s two international fixtures. McCarthy, who has been called up twice before but never capped, has replaced injured Burnley stopper Nick Pope, who suffered a dislocated shoulder in a Europa League qualifier.

The 28-year-old took Southampton’s starting spot in the second half of last season from Fraser Forster and the Guildford-born star has kept his place this season, playing all three Premier League matches.

Everton’s Jordan Pickford is named in the squad and is expected to retain his number one jersey, whilst Stoke City’s Jack Butland also makes the cut despite enduring a difficult start to the season in the Championship.

McCarthy will be hopeful of featuring for England in some capacity, with a UEFA Nations League clash against Spain on September 8 followed by a friendly with Switzerland three days later.
