McCarthy, Radebe, Others To Pick New Bafana Coach

Former Bafana Bafana greats Lucas Radebe and Benni McCarthy are part of a 10-man committee set up by the South African Football Association to search for a new senior national team coach, SAFA revealed on their website on Thursday.

Bafana are without a head coach since the sacking of Shakes Mashaba last year after he fell out with SAFA.

They will open their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign against the Super Eagles of Nigeria in Uyo in June.

McCarthy and Radebe both represented South Africa at the France 1998 and Korea/Japan 2002 FIFA World Cups.

Radebe was a member of the Bafana team that won the 1996 AFCON which South Africa hosted.

Also, under Jose Mourinho, McCarthy was a member of the FC Porto team that won the 2004 UEFA Champions League.

Other members in the committee include Bafana 1996 AFCON-winning captain Neil Tovey and SAFA President Danny Jordan.

Speaking on the task ahead of them, SAFA president Jordaan said Bafana's target is to qualify for every tournament they will enter for.

"We want to have the process expedited as Bafana Bafana have a bumper 2017 season in which they need to compete and qualify on three fronts – namely CHAN, AFCON and the FIFA World Cup in Russia2018," he said.
