PAUL MERSON believes Liverpool’s top four hopes will be over should they lose to Arsenal tomorrow and Manchester United beat Aston Villa.
A 13-game unbeaten run had taken the Reds to within two points of the Champions League qualification following a disappointing first part of the season.
But a 2-1 defeat against a rejuvenated United side saw them slip five points behind with eight games to play.
They travel to the Emirates to face third-place Arsenal looking to get their top-four quest back on track but defeat could see them fall eight points behind the Red Devils.
And Merson thinks United’s performances in the win at Anfield and the 3-0 demolition of Tottenham means that gap would be too big for Brendan Rodgers’ side to make up.
“Liverpool cannot afford to lose at the Emirates,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“If they do and Manchester United win then they could find themselves eight points behind Louis van Gaal’s side.
“That’s far too many with the way United are playing at the moment.
“There will also be plenty of pressure on Raheem Sterling to perform after his comments this week and that could hinder Liverpool.”
