Barcelona beat their closest rivals Atletico Madrid 1-0 on Sunday to open an eight-point gap at the top of the Spanish La Liga Santander table.
Lionel Messi curled in a stunning free-kick in the 22nd minute to hand Barcelona the lead.
The goal was Messi’s 600th in his career for club and country, 539 for Barcelona, 61 for Argentina.
It was also Messi’s 28th goal in all competitions against Atletico Madrid.
Barcelona dominated the first half and were denied scoring chances by Jan Oblak in goal.
Luis Suarez, Andreas Iniesta and Messi all came close to scoring in the first half.
In the second half, Atletico improved and pushed for an equaliser but rarely threatened the goal of Barcelona.
Kevin Gamiero had the ball in the back of the net but his goal was ruled out as Diego Costa was offside as the ball was delivered.
