MFM FC skipper, Austine Opara, says it's only determination and hardwork that will see them retaining the top spot in the league table till the end of the season,  reports.

MFM  usurped former leaders Plateau United following a hard-fought 2-1 win against Rivers United on Wednesday at the Agege Stadium in a rescheduled Nigeria Professional Football League match.

A first half brace from Stephen Odey – both from the penalty spot, secured the win for MFM. Rivers United goal was scored by Christian Weli also in the first half.

Speaking after the win, Opara however admitted that staying top in the league will be tough.

"Our being top in the league till the end of the season depends on our hard work," Opara told

"It will depend on our determination. We will continue to do our best to make sure we remain top, but it will not be easy," Opara said.

Opara who was impressive in MFM's central defence against Rivers Unitef, described the win as a hard-fought one.

"I wasn't surprised about the outcome of the game because I knew it would be a tough game.

"Rivers United are a very good side and since the beginnning of the season, this is the toughest game we've played. But I am happy that despite the difficult nature of the game, we managed to secure the win.

"The first and second half were both balanced but luckily for us, we were able to emerge victorious."
