MFM Coach Ilechukwu: Home-Based Eagles Should Face Algeria

By Izuchukwu Okosi: Mountain of Fire and Miracles (MFM) coach Fidelis Ilechukwu hopes the technical crew of the Super Eagles will give players of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) the opportunity of playing against Algeria in Nigeria’s last 2018 World Cup qualifier in November, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

The Eagles qualified for their sixth FIFA World Cup after defeating Zambia 1-0 on Saturday with coach Gernot Rhor insisting that he wants his team to win the match against Algeria.

Ilechukwu however believes that the game should be prosecuted by largely the home-based contingent.

“I feel giving the home-based players the chance to play against Algeria is the best idea,” Ilechukwu told Completesportsnigeria.com from Switzerland where he is on a coaching course.

“Playing the NPFL lads will give them the confidence they need to improve their game.

“Some players from the Npfl might end up convincing the national team coaches that they’re good enough to play in top matches with the foreign based players, you never know.

“The likes of Chukwuka Onuwa and Sikiru Olatunbosun and others might just need this opportunity which will be beneficial to the team preparing for the 2018 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN),” the MFM coach concluded.

  • Nonsense, Home based eagles have CHAN next year

  • Arrant nonsense! The home eagles that was disgraced by Ghanaian home black stars? Odeshi! The coach knows what to do and might come with the blend of both home and the foreign players that have not been tested since the beginning of the qualifiers. I learnt the team B beat the team A during the training so it won’t be bad playing team B with the blend of few home eagles.

  • I don’t know why you guys are insulting the coach. The match against Algeria is a mere formality not a must win or draw therefore a good Avenue of preparing our home based players for the next edition of CHAN we can also use it to test our unused substitutes in our qualifiers!

    • Is it this year CHAN or next?

    • Oga the preparation for the world starts with the algerian match. That match will serve as a good opportunity to test uncapped players and recall some who are doing well in their respective clubs. This same sentimemt of fielding homebased players has hindered the super eagles from getting to where it ought to be. Those homebased keshi, oliseh and siasia used where are they now?

    • We have quality foreign players to test, players like Ogu, Aina, Nwakaeme, Alampasu etc. We can’t waste this opportunity for players who are not good enough.

  • Unused players can be used but not home based

  • Definitely he will have to use, Henry Onyekuru, Kingsley Madu Ibrahim Muazzam and more he needs back up more over there is still AFCON qualifies so he can see more players.

  • For what na???
We need to test our second team to knw hw dey can mix with d regular, not jst waste it away on pipu u are sure won’t make d team

  • Thinking abt this issue myself playin 50% of our home base will be better option

  • My friend shut up.with which players?.or with those lazy players we all saw at wafu championship.

Home Eagles should make do with CHAN. We want to secure maximum points from the qualifiers to improve our FIFA ranking before the seedings for the World Cup is done. You want to take home Eagles there for Algeria to secure her first win on their heads. Ko le werk!

  • Temitope Adeola 4 years ago

You have good point sir but we have other pros in that team who came far distance just to remain on the bench for entire game. I feel they’re the ones Gernot Rohr should consider now plus two or three other NPFL guys.

  • No way we should play John ogu and co all the invitees that didn’t play

  • The match shud serve as the beginning of our preparation for Russia W/C, some of untested xubs n yet to be invited good players, not home based bcos we saw their strength in the WAFU cup can be used to discover better options for the team weak positions like left back, top striking, creative playing role in the middle if Mikel is pulled out etc

This MFM coach does not consider the fact that FIFA may sanction Nigeria one way or the other if the weak, Home-based Nigeria is hammered 6 – 0 by Algeria! I support giving some of the Super Eagles like Mikel, Moses, Balogun and Ighalo a rest, if they want to. The Algerian game should be part of the World Cup preparations, and this is the time to see those players who had been warming the bench, and believe they’re just as good as the ones who played. Let us now cap Nwakaeme, Ebuehi, and field Ogu, Agbo, Ajiboye, Osimhen, Muazzam, etc.

  • @Ilechukwu, it seems you are missing the point here. You saw Germans last night? Those players look like the German 3rd eleven. They are testing for some new players to take over from the aging one. Nigeria is in need of a left-footed left-back position to take over from the aging Elderson Echiejile. We are looking for a prolific finisher in the attack. We are also looking for a defensive midfielder. This is the opportunity to test some of those players on the bench. NPFL players have the WAFU, CHAN and local league to work their way into the Eagles camp. Ezenwa is one NPFL. This is no time to toy around. Serious preparation starts now with that vs Algeria match. After the grouping in December we will know the direction the preparation will face. @ubah. I do not expect this type of language from you. You owe him an apology. Maybe the coach is your senior in age. Come to think of it, what he suggested is not bad. It is for the national interest. The local players are part of the Eagles too under Mr. Rohr. If he decides to use them, we will only complain. After all the Chan/Wafu team also need encouragement. Don’t you think so? So don’t be influenced by those who use rotten language on others in this forum. Don’t stoop so low.

You are quite right on the fact that we need a left back replacement or substitute for Echiejile, we need an attacking midfielder not Defensive midfielder. We also need a more clinical finisher. But in all honesty I don’t see NPFL players cutting it not for the Algerian match or for the World Cup.

  • Nawa o! Imagine this man as super eagles coach, he has already mentioned two players that will be in his team..from there u will hear..moses get attitude like odemwengie, iheanacho is not disciplined like ike uche..sone aluko is one of d player dat suffered from all these people, even this moses at the world cup was on d bench for Babatunde.enuf is enuf we don’t want to manage anymore, we want d best. Papa idris, Solomon kwambe, Agbim, mba, salami, uzoenyi, rueben Gabriel, nwofor, egwekwe and so on are no where to be found and 80% of them went to world cup. Just leave rohr o!…IN ROHR WE TRUST!

  • How I wish say I see this man,I for no take am easy with am,which home based eagle,na bcos of those yeye players make we go back again for FIFA ranking, when dem dey loose anyhow. The real eagles go dey win match dey go up for ranking, while those old men go dey draw us back

  • They should play world cup too right?

  • Home based for wia, common Ghana they can’t beat! Please use your second team.

  • Rather, team B should play Algeria instead…

Pls rohr dont listen to this mfm coach. The preparation for the world should start with this algerian match. This should serve as a good platform to test some uncapped players and recall few who deserve to be recalled. Players like john ogu, tony nwakaeme, iheanacho, henry onyekuru, uche agbo, chidozie awaziem, tyrone ebuehi amd even noah sarenren bazee if fit should be given a chance to prove theirselves with the algerian match. This sentiment of fielding some home based players have never been favourable to the growth of the team instead it deprives the team the slots to test deserving talents who are doing well in their respective clubs abroad. The late keshi of blessed memory made us believe our best talents are in the npl and used quiet a number of them during his reign as the team’s coach but all a sudden they went to oblivion. Paul onobi who oliseh made us to bliv is better than john obi mikel and indirectly humiliated the latter by benching him for the former where is he today? Last time i checked onobi couldnt make it in one of the obscure leagues in europe(finland to be precise) and was released. This is one edge european coaches hv over our indigenious coaches; they dont attach sentiment when called upon to work. They go for qualified personels who will help them achieve their aim rather than gambling with mediocres.

  • Yes coach… You are right

  • Preparation for the Mundial should start now. Or else NFF should guarantee at least five grade A friendly matches before world cup.

  • What did they do with the WAFU cup tournament? They lost disgracefuly to Ghana and this one still has mouth to talk

  • We need more striker like Gbolahan Salami in our Squard

  • Dis is not d time to give any players chance.. because d coach must test the best players among dem and they also need to play more friendly matches…

  • so that they can destroy our FIFA ranking for that month abi. doesn’t he know that, that month ranking is what will be use for d draw?

  • Bring on ur MFM boys

  • Arrant nonsense….which home base? The one’s that couldn’t beat Ghana home base will now beat the Algeria national team??? A good name they say is better than riches…….we should keep our winning trek and not go fool ourselves before the Algerians in our home soil like what happened during Nigeria vs South Africa

  • Our local players must improve if they want a place in the Super Eagles. For now most of them aren’t good enough

  • I don’t he see what they did in WAFU tournament, if Gernot Rohr give them opportunity against Algeria, we’ll be beaten by 10 nil.

  • Absolute Nonsense, why? For what? OK u guys don’t have the opportunity to Smuggling of Fake players we don’t know,People from UR Village u want them to Come and Play Super Eagles, U think its a Friendly Match..Let’s Stop Corruption and do what is Right…If u think the can play why didn’t they Win WAFU for us?
