MFM FC’s playmaker Onuwa Chukwuka has declared that while finishing runners-up will be a massive achievement for the church team, they are resolved to aim higher and emerge champions of the Nigerian Premier Football League in just their second year in the top-flight.
Onuwa, who starred in the 1-0 win over Gombe United in a Matchday 35 encounter at the Agege Stadium on Sunday told Completesportsnigeria.com that the Olukoya Boys have proven all doubters wrong with their achievements so far even as they’re not ready to cede the title just yet to league leaders Plateau United.
“We came into the league last season and we had a bit of a struggle but we learnt from our mistakes and it is showing in our performances so far. We want to win the league but a second spot finish won’t be bad for a team that’s just spending the second season in the NPFL,” he said.
The pint-sized midfield dynamo who’s won admiration from a lot of pundits was surprisingly left out of the Super Eagles team which qualified for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Saturday after a 2-1 aggregate win over Benin Republic is however excited about the prospect of playing on the continent with MFM next season.
“We want to win the League but even if we finish second we’ll still win a continental ticket and that will be a massive achievement for us. We will do our best and do well when we represent Nigeria whether as champions of Nigeria or runners-up. Most important thing is to maintain our momentum and finish well at the end of the season,” the former 3SC and Heartland player said.
Three points separate the two top teams on the league with MFM due to play two of their remaining three games away while Plateau United have two home games to play at their Rwang Pam slaughter ground.
