Phil Mickelson did enough to overcome Tiger Woods and win the $9million prize in their head-to-head battle in Las Vegas. The matchplay event between the two Americans has dominated the headlines for the last few weeks.

Neither player could move clear by the time they had completed 18 holes, but Mickelson managed to win under the floodlights. He eventually sunk a four-foot putt to claim the cash prize, with Mickelson donating some of his winnings to charity.

The two veterans of the game have won 19 majors between them, with Woods coming out on top for the majority of their battles.

Mickelson admits it was an honour to play in the contest and he was pleased to finally get one over the 14-time major champion.

He told reporters: “I’m just trying to calm down, my heart can’t take any more, it was such an incredible opportunity. “He’s the greatest of all time but to have a little bit of smack talk for the coming years means a lot to me because I don’t have a lot on him!”
