Mikel Agu Makes Portuguese League Team Of The Week

By Johnny Edward:
Nigeria midfielder Mikel Agu’s impressive showing in Vitoria de Setubal’s 2-1 win over Fierense in a Portuguese Primeira Liga game on Friday has been rewarded with a nomination into the GoalPoint Team Of The Week for Matchday 10, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

The authoritative statistical data website which is highly regarded in Portugal rated Agu as Setubal’s most influential player in the match played at their Estadio de Bonfim ground

The Super Eagles midfielder, the only African to make the list for the week, was also the only Setubal player to be nominated.

GoalPoint wrote thusly about Agu:

Zenith Ziva

“Mikel Agu (Vitória FC) 6.5 – The Sadinos are making a very positive season and, in a 2-1 home win over Feirense, Nigerian midfielder Agu was in all the action spots, with a shot on target, good passes and great competence in teamwork – he won three defensive air duels, six recoveries of possession, and ten defensive actions which included four interceptions.”

Vitoria de Guimares had four players on the list while Nacional, Sporting, Moreirense, Rio Ave, Benfica and Ave had one nomination each in the 11-man list.

Agu has been in inspired form since joining Setubal, the team which once paraded the late Rashidi Yekini, on deadline day after a loan move from parent club FC Porto.

He’s been an ever-present in the team roster and his impressive showing led to a recall to the national team for the 25year old all-action star.

Agu is expected to hit the national team camp later on Monday for the Super Eagles 2019 AFCON qualifiers against South Africa next Saturday.

  • Good for him and Nigeria. Keep it up bro.

    God bless Nigeria.

  • Nigerian players we’re on fire this week. 4 players made their leagues team of the week (Agu, Ndidi, Troost and Onyekuru), three man of the match performances (Kalu, Ndidi and Onyekuru) 3 goals (Onyekuru and Chukwueze) and top scores in ratings across the board. Success producing highest ratings of Watford attacking players and Osimhen likely to get player of the month for Charleroi.

Based on ratings, the first team picks itself, however, still based on performance in training.  Going forward when all players are available and present, the argument between Who is better between Agu and Ndidi will be settled on the pitch with them side by side like brothers in arms

Fantastic selection headache for Rohr and players peaking at just the right time

    • Yes o. Is this the time when certain players prove doubters wrong.

Even Akpeyi kept a clean sheet against powerhouse Kaiser chiefs over the weekend with a finger-tip save in about the 43rd minute the highlight of a decent display.

Akpeyi is so lucky that Rohr hardly gives up quickly on his players. He should be repay that faith if selected on Saturday against the very fingers that feed him.

In all, these are some of the best times of being a Super Eagles fan. Our poor players are getting good (Agu etc), the good ones are getting better (Ighalo etc) and the better ones are just hitting top form (Iwobi etc).

It will be a major upset if South Africa gets anything out of that match on Saturday….

  • Wow,,Impressive Performances From The SE Players Troost Eking,Mikel Agu,Etc Being listed In Team Of The Week Across European Leagues.Confidence Brimming Allover Ahead South Africa Match

What a time to be super eagles’ coach.

    • you can say that again.. I can but envy Rohr..i think his impact an influence in some way is rubbing off on our players..his connection with the top guns in European football allows for his players to be accorded respect and the players are also striving hard to keep their places in the team as we have an avalanche of players at the moment

  • -Edoman 3 years ago

There may be no space for Balogun this weekend. Omeruo is in form at the moment.

  • am so glad wit our players performance these weekend….it was awesome…..blessup

  • Edoman of New Jersey, USA 3 years ago

There may be no space for Balogun this weekend. Omeruo is there to do the job. He is in form at the moment. Balogun has been sitting on the bench for too long now.

  • Good.patience with players.look at igalo, the love of all fans now.akpeyi I keep saying is the best.forget past experience.if coach had listened to fans, igalo wouldn’t have come back to super eagles
