Nigeria midfielder John Mikel Obi will participate in today’s charity tournament in Turkey to help raise funds for the families of those who suffered as a result of the Soma mining disaster.
The unusual format of the tournament is centred on three 45-minute matches. Hosts Fenerbahce which is expected to feature compatriot Emmanuel Emenike will play Besiktas in the first game, before Blues feature, first against Fenerbahce and then Besiktas.
Mikel who played for 45 minutes in Chelsea’s 3-0 loss to Werder Bremen last Sunday is expected to feature.
Captain John Terry said before the team’s departure: “We are playing two very good sides so it will be good competition which is what we need before our season kicks off.
“It’ll be two very intense 45-minute games. It’s a bit different to what we are used to but to cram it in and get the games in is a good format really.
“It’ll serve a purpose for us pre-season.”
Terry is set to come up against frontman Demba Ba, who has swapped Chelsea for Besiktas.
He added: “It’s a very passionate, hostile atmosphere there. Obviously Didier [Drogba] is back so he knows all about that.
Meanwhile, erstwhile Super Eagles skipper Joseph Yobo has not been included in Fenerbache’s pre-season squad for this weekend’s Soma Fundraiser Charity Tournament which will feature Chelsea and Besiktas at the Kadiköy Sükrü Saracoglu Stadium.
