Mikel Plays Down Chelsea’s 3-0 Defeat To Bremen

–Backs summer signings to fire Chelsea to glory

Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi is confident the Blues’s summer arrivals will help José Mourinho’s men win silverware after starring in the club’s 3-0 pre-season loss to German Bundesliga side,Werder Bremen on Sunday.

Mourinho has snapped up Atlético Madrid striker Diego Costa, former Arsenal captain Cesc Fàbregas, Chelsea legend Didier Drogba, Mario Pasalic and Brazil full-back Filipe Luis.

The Blues finished in third place last season and failed to win any of their three cup competitions, losing to Atlético in the Champions League last four.

And Mikel, who helped Nigeria reach the World Cup knockout stage last month, backed Mourinho’s new signings to help Chelsea improve in the coming seasons.

“The character and the belief that we have in this team, from the players that have been here a long time, I’m sure that will transform into the new players,” Mikel told Chelsea’s website.

“It’s always a big pressure playing for this club. You always expect to win trophies every year so I’m sure the new players that have come in will help us win more trophies.” Mikel also revealed he is “glad” to have Didier Drogba back at the club.

The striker, 36, returned to Stamford Bridge on a one-year deal at the end of last month following a brief spell with Galatasaray.

Despite Drogba coming towards the end of his career, Mikel believes that the veteran forward still has plenty to offer Chelsea.

“I heard the rumours (that Drogba would come back) but I thought there was no way it was going to happen,” he told Chelsea’s official website.

“I thought when he’s gone, he’s gone, but then I thought about it a bit more and I realised it could happen because of the connection that the gaffer and Didier have always had.

“I’m glad to have him back. It’s like his home. He’s fitting in perfectly well again. It’s like he never went away. It’s good for the team because he’s a big player and a big personality.”

Drogba scored 157 goals for Chelsea during his initial eight-year spell with the club.
