Per Mertasacker was red-carded five minutes before Costa’s side footed goal.
Mathieu Flamini was presented with two chances in the first half, unable to make contact with the ball after some intricate passes by the Gunners and the 45th minute hooking of the ball above the post as Aaron Ramsey waltzed into the Chelsea vital area and lobbed the ball towards him.
Mesut Ozil returned to the Arsenal line-up after sitting out last weekend’s draw at Stoke in place of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, while Alexis Sanchez, who has been missing since November, found a place on the bench.
Gabriel Paulista’s tackle of Diego Costa in the 37th minute was a reminder of the flashpoint that characterised the corresponding fixture at Stamford Bridge which led to the red cards to Gabriel and Santi Cazorla.
Arsene Wenger introduced Alexis Sanchez in the second half while Chelsea brought Eden Hazard but both men were unable to get on the scorers’ chart as they returned from injuries.
