Mikel: Super Eagles Will Bounce Back From Serbia Defeat

By Adeboye Amosu

Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has backed the team to bounce back from Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat against Serbia and hopes to take part in the side’s remaining tune-up games ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Completesportsnigeria. com reports.

The three-time African champions put up a disappointing display in the encounter played at the Hive Stadium, London with Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic scoring both goals for Serbia.

Mikel missed the game and the previous friendly against Poland due to work permit issue in his base in China.

“You don’t lose, you learn 💪🏾 Looking forward to being back on the pitch for our remaining preparation games 🇳🇬#SoarSuperEagles,” the Tiajin Teda of China midfielder wrote on his Twitter handle.

Gernot Rohr’s men still have three more friendlies left before they proceed to Russia 2018.

The West Africans will take on Congo in Abuja or Uyo on May 25, and then take on the Three Lions of England on June 2nd at the Wembley Stadium.

Their last tune-up game is against Czech Republic on June 6th in Austria

They will play Croatia in their opening game on June 16 at the Kaliningrad Stadium. Argentina and Iceland are the other teams in the group.

Coach Gernot Rohr must work on team organization, bite and flair movement, movement on and off the ball especially in opposition half. “Their ball circulation and distribution was very poor, and we could not even string four, five passes complete in the opponent’s half. So, I think if they can work on these aspects, the team will do better in subsequent matches, the team needs quality replacement for the first eleven. Injuries or lost of form are a daily occurrence in football so they be ably ready to do a good job at all times. Too many work still to do. My verdict is Nigeria ain’t good enough for a second round spot. No deception.

    • I agree with you 100%, the Nigerian team might not make it out of that group……

Analysing Super Eagles performance in the last three matches against Argentina, Poland and Serbia obviously showed the attacking prowess of the Nigerian Super Eagles is fast fading, though they won two matches by providence. The Nigerian Team hitherto known for fast, attacking football have resorted to defensive pattern of play, perhaps due to injuries or new formations and/or tactics introduced by the German Coach? Definitely, this Team or game plan may not do well against world class teams in the coming Fifa World Cup unless their system, attitude and approach to matches were overhauled. The defeat to Serbia is an eye opener with lessons to learn.

  • When we won against Argentina and Poland we praised them. Please let’s cheer them up

The super eagle match against Serbia should not be look with disappointment, why because personally I expected Nigeria to lose this match for the simple psychology of average European mentality ,to them can’t afford to lose to African team twice in a row, first they lost to Morroco, then the Nigeria game.I know becuase of the way Serbia players and their coach were speaking to the press about the game anainst Nigeria, saying them must win the game with Nigeria after the game against Morocco which they 2-1 , so this is why Serbia aproach the game the way they did, contest everyball and never let our player have possession of the ball and presented their A team in yestaday’s game. And for the eagles there were lot of changes made with super eagles player which also affected their disjointed performance during the game, and finally check the Sebian’s coach interview after the game.this same mentality backfire again ploand and watchout for it against England, especially if Nigeria score first and you will see this mentality on full display come June.Pay attention to their press statement before and after the match when ever they are playing against teams from the continent.

Mike excuses of not securing a particular document before traveling is becoming suspicious. I hope the situation will not be same when going to Russia finally. However, Nigeria was able to have controversial goal line issue work in her favour within four days as such may not be in their favor as VAR will be on ground during the world cup in Russia. They must change their defensive attitude before the world cup. Again, because they lost to Serbia, some people are not seeing them as a team that will make it to second round. What about Argentina that lost 6-1 to Their opponent? Will they also miss out for the second round? I know you will say no, because it is Argentina. This is not how to give a critical appraisal of a situation. You have to state both STRENGHT AND WEAKNESS of a team, but you only come to conclusion by focusing on their weaknesses. This is not good enough. Now hear me out, Nigeria will get to the semi-final.

I actually wanted us to lose to Serbia. You know why. So that other teams in our world cup group will begin to think that they can walk over us with ease at the world cup. People have started criticizing the players and the coach on the partnership of Ekong and Awaziem. The coach can never use this combination at the world cup.Even when you see the way our coach was making changes you know he just want to see how every player can adapt. Before these friendlies, all the teams in our group promised to send spies to watch our team. So do you want us to play our friendlies the way we will play them at the world cup.I don’t think so. I believe in our coach. He is an experienced and crafty coach. Expect us to lose one or two more of our friendlies coming up in May and June. It is a blessing in disguise. The other teams in our group will be spying on us. But our coach is going to make it “The more you look, the less you see for them.” One more thing, one of the strength of our team is that they run a lot and like using spaces. But do you notice that the field is small. it did not help our players either.

I sincery thank the coach for his pass achievements for the country. But i am not happy about the way he made changes in the game. i think it is wrong to do try and error at a critical moment when you no that u are about losing the match. The game was better until he changes victor moses. Instead of changing your key player at times, u better change his wing because his presence alone post fear and disarray to the opponent deffence

  • there would be surprises at the world cup, trust me.where the first would be the last and last the first.God Bless our Super eagles, you can be better than these.
