Argentina midfielder Lucas Biglia faces a race against time to be fit for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia in June after he sustained a back injury while playing for AC Milan in Saturday’s Italian Serie A defeat at home to Benevento.
Biglia suffered a slight lumbar fracture in his back and has been ruled out of action for at least six weeks.
“Biglia suffered “a severe lumbar trauma” following an injury during Saturday’s 1-0 Serie A defeat against Benevento,” Milan said in a statement on Sunday.
“The player has undergone medical examinations that highlighted a fracture of the transverse processes of the first two lumbar vertebrae.
“A detailed prognosis will be issued in the coming days upon completion of all medical tests.”
Biglia starred for Argentina at the 2014 World Cup where they finished as runners-up to Germany.
He also played in most of their 18-match qualifying campaign.
Argentina will face Croatia, Iceland and Nigeria in Group D at the World Cup in Russia.
