Monaco: Echiejile One Of Our Top Players

By Johnny Edward:

Super Eagles defender Elderson Echiejile has been named as one of many Monaco top players by the club’s website.

Other players that made the list include Subasic Danijel, Fabinho, Raggi Andrea, Carvalho Ricardo, Toulalan Jérémy, Pasalic Mario, Lemar Thomas, Dirar Nabil, Cavaleiro Ivan, El Shaarawy Stephan, Carrillo Guido and Traoré Adama.

The Nigerian international who is expected to make his second Ligue 1 start (his fourth in all competitions) away at Gazélec Ajaccio is confident the Europa League campaigners can compete well this term despite losing four key players in the summer transfer window.

Monaco sold key players such as Geoffrey Kondogbia, Anthony Martial, Aymen Abdennour, Lavyin Kurzawa but brought in Fabio Coentrao, Rony Lopes, Gabriel Boschilia, Cavaleiro, Traore, Stephan El Shaarawy, Helder Costa and Lemar and Echiejile expects stern opposition from Lyon, Marseille, Saint-Etienne and Bordeaux for a top three spot in the Ligue 1 this season.

“I genuinely think we can do very well this season,” Echiejile told

“We played against a very strong PSG side. We need to get out heads up and focus on the next challenges. I’m confident. I genuinely think we can do very well this season.

The key is to stay together and keep working hard collectively.”

On the chances of Monaco doing well in the Europa League, the 27 year old defender admits that they must get their campaign off to a winning start having been drawn against Tottenham, Anderlecht and Qarabag.

“Sometimes, people think the Europa League is not a very difficult competition. But if we’re going to get out of our group, we’ll need to take it very seriously and get off to a really strong start.

“Of my best memories in the Red & Whites, the number one is obviously the win at Arsenal. Almost nobody believed in us. That showed our real worth, because it took a great team to produce that performance.”
