Liberia’s President, George Weah, on Friday awarded former Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger with the country’s highest title, the Knight Grand Commander of the Humane Order of African Redemption, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Thousands of spectators cheered as Wenger received his medal inside the hall of the nation’s national stadium Monrovia.
Claude Le Roy, who first told Wenger about Weah, also received the award of Knight Grand Commander of the Humane Order of African Redemption.
Weah lavished praises on his former manager who gave him his breakthrough in football.
“You proved yourself as a teacher when you revolutionized forever the approach of scouting young talents all over the planet, particularly throughout Africa,” Reuters quotes Weah as saying of his former coach during the ceremony in Monrovia.
Former Ghana President, John Kuffour, was also in attendance during the ceremony.
Weah was signed by Wenger from Tonnerre Yaounde when he was coaching Monaco in 1988. Weah went on to play for PSG, AC Milan,Chelsea, Manchester City and Al Jazira.
