By James Agberebi:

The Super Eagles pipped Poland 1-0 in Wroclaw in Friday’s pre-World Cup friendly.

Victor Moses’ second half penalty after he was fouled was enough to secure the win for the Super Eagles.

The game saw young Deportivo La Coruna goalkeeper Francis Uzoho make his first start for the Super Eagles.

Zenith Ziva

It was a game the Super Eagles failed to create clear scoring opportunities and mostly played on the back foot before their goal.

Robert Lewandoski had the game’s first big chance on eight minutes after sliding to meet a dangerous low cross and his effort came off the post with Uzoho well beaten.

The game was briefly stopped on 10 minutes following injury to Karol Linetty over a collision.

Poland were forced into an early substitution as Linetty could not continue and had to be replaced.

The Super Eagles won a free-kick in a good area on 34 minutes but Moses’ effort went over the wall but did not trouble Lukasz Fabianski in the Poland goal.

In the 40th minute, Odion Ighalo connected with Moses’ free-kick which went just wide off target.

Poland thought they had taken the lead after the ball looked to have crossed the line before Leon Balogun cleared. Replays showed that the had indeed crossed the line before Leon Balogun cleared but the officials did not give the hosts the goal.

A minute later Uzoho was called into action as he dived full length to parry Lewandowski’s long range goal bound free-kick away for a corner.

Poland should have opened the scoring in the 56th minute following brilliant interchange of passes but Uzoho, growing in confidence, stopped Lewandowski from close range.

The Super Eagles made their first change with Ahmed Musa replacing Iwobi in the second half.

The Super Eagles took the lead in the 61st minute through Moses who converted from the penalty spot after he was fouled inside the box.

In the 66th minute, Poland almost equalised from a free-kick which narrowly went over the bar.

Poland went close again on 76 minutes but William Troost-Ekong made a superb block to deny the goal-bound strike.

The Eagles had a chance to double their lead on 83 minutes after good play from Moses inside the box only to see his cross blocked away for a corner.

And in the 92nd minute, Uzoho made a comfortable save from a corner kick.

Up next for the Super Eagles is another friendly match in London against Serbia in London.

poor pitch hindered the quality of the game. Overall, lucky win for Nigeria.. well played sirs

  • There is so much work to do in this team.for the first time, our attack looked very blunt but the attackers put in a wonderful shift, with their pressing.we didn’t create scoring chances, poor in our link up play. Something is missing in victor Moses game. GOD help him discover his mojo.Uzoho grew into the game after a shaky start.eagles are directionless without Obi ‘zidane’ Mikel.that calm and control was so lost in the midfield. We need to work on our game. We can grow into a formidable team but for now,we have a lot to do in this team.peace

You right .i think we have problems defending corner kicks .iheanacho has nothing to offer .musa would had done better

    • ovoke ogheneovo 3 years ago

We need another top nine, we can’t be relying on only ighalo. You can’t be going to a tournament like the world cup with only one point man…we need strikers who can convert half chances.

    • Lest I forget ,a true great team is known by their resilience. They fought gallantly.but we also caused those pressures on us because of the way we were ceding possession to the polish team.mikel’s position and contribution is invaluable.we need the leaders to stand up to be counted. They fought very well but we can do better. We must grow to be less dependent on Mikel’s influence. Agreed, every team has their leaders.without messi,no Argentina.without Ronaldo,Portugal is an ordinary team.GR has a lot of work to do but thankfully the coach is not still chopping and changing, rather he is working with a set of players which makes bonding faster.#goeagles

Up Super Eagles. I will advise coach Rohr to talk to victor Moses where to taking his free-kicks. For example, Olishe and Okocha were taken free-kicks during their era and the each of them knew where and when to taken theirs. It’s depends of the area of the spot on the pitch. Kelechi might score the free-kick Moses wasted at the 1st half. Moses should be humble a bit. Though, he showed his class to gave us the win but this is a team, not individual efforts alone. God bless Nigeria!!!

    • Totally agreed with you my brother, moses should be humble enough , not an individual show, kelechi could have score that free kick… Well kudos to all

    • Tamuno. 3 years ago

Omo9ja you are 100% correct moses need to humble himself and also show some respect to his fellow team mates as he is not the only big player in the team,he should allow KC play free kicks all the freekicks if possible please coach Rohr take note. I rest my case.

My dear this boys tried, we don’t expect them to play like baca after just some days training,,, it is a friendly match to put a proper team together . Kudos to all the boys n coaches, uzoh good performance. Let’s not forget this match was played in poland

Winning is all that matter. Playing away match is never easy. Kudos to our team today. We won.

  • I am baffled that at this stage where other countries are playing mathematical football our so called SUPER eagles are playing Rugby football calling it soccer. No purpose.. no style of play.. just kick and hope to score. polish still play better and superbly than us. They are coordinated.. pacing accurately from point A to B to C but what are we doing… I bet Argentina will be laughing seriously.. what is these.. Bunch of unskilled armature players calling them self pro .. The coach himself is just gambling looking worried, this match is so important to him than even the world cup match.. Men if this team is what we are taking to the world cup mennnnn it could have been better if we dint qualified. NFA PLS bring SIASIA BACK. YOUR COACH IS JUST GAMBLING HE KNOWS NOTHING

    • lambert 3 years ago

na only siasia ewu…go bring chukwu ya broda.

    • Did you watch the game? Maybe you watched a different game. Mathematical football! more like chemistry football.

    • Tipsyboy 3 years ago

Mr Femi, please read your own write up and see how many negetive verbs you used in your statement above, but on lighter note, the polish player were agressive and closing up our player and not allowing them possesion or turns with the ball and tried to force our boys to commit error but our boys understood it and were patient defended very well, because the polish know our boys are skill with the ball on their feet, this was the tactic they used in the game and only reason the polish lost via Moses penalty.

    • This is an away match in Poland for Gods sake, and the Polish were way more technical. So thank ur God our boys absorbed the pressure and still won, that’s what matters, its just a friendly. Pls wake up Siasia is past tense.

  • Key points from the game: The team kept the shape and were disciplined for 90 minutes (that’s unusual for any Nigeria team). So kudos to the coach for setting up the team. The attack was lifeless, and the team lacks initiative going forward, which implies that Kelechi is no number 10. While we are all complaining about goalkeepers, perhaps we should be lamenting playmakers (creative midfielders). Idowu was descent, I don’t think his performance will worry Elderson at all. Ebuehi should start at right back, he’s more enterprising going forward plus his positioning on defense is the best I’ve seen from a Nigerian full back. Ighalo is the man to the lead the attack, Iwobi needs to be more assertive but I’ll give him a pass because bunghole Mikel was not at the 10. Victor Moses is a game changer, he needs to be better with his body language. You don’t have to be dramatic when teammates makes mistake. Joel Obi would solid coming off the bench. Onazi shows a difference in class from Joel.
Overall it’s a good start. Rohr pushed all the right buttons. Francis is the number one goalkeeper going forward. He was solid after a nervy start. I like the direction of this team- still a work in progress.

  • Kudos to d lads, repost wrong played very well, musa should not go to Russia pls,he has lost form completely. I think that other should use iwobi in that position that iheanacho played today, he was loosing possession cheaply and he is not a good passer of the ball. I prefer in d box as a false 9.

  • jonathan orike 3 years ago

up naija! My prediction enter, nice play but we still have more to do fr the world cup.

  • Kudos to our players they played to the coach instruction, bad positioning of play our players played individual football no team play

  • Well,as far as I am concerned, the Coach has tried. Some of the players fucked up. The lads only need to out their acts together and make Nigeria proud. Uzoho and Joel did well. Moses was awesome but needs to step up. Gernot Rohr should not interweave justice with mercy. World Cup is a different kettle of fish. It is not an inter house sports.

I’m baffled at the kind of “Mathematical football” that Femi was watching. LMAO! We played against the 6th ranked team in the world with players that are mostly playing together for the first time. SuperEagles kept their shape throughout the game until Joel Obi was replaced. With the return of general Mikel Obi I think Rohr might’ve found the perfect midfield combo with Ndidi and Joel (I hope he stays fit) complementing Mikel. I’m not sure if Ighalo will be the ideal striker at the WorldCup I’ll rather have Kelechi play the false 9 role. The defensive partnership of Ekong and Balogun is perhaps the best I’ve seen in a very long time. Idowu was descent and disciplined, but I don’t think he’s better than Echiejile. Shehu is not very disciplined for my liking and I believe Ebuehi is the right choice at right back. In his cameo appearance today he was a joy to watch. Uzoho was a little shaky at first, but grew into the game and made a vital stop on Lewandowski. Overall SuperEagles played incredible well and it was a hard earned victory.

  • @ Femi be a critical constructivist in what way have Nigeria played Poland like rugby football were they pushing or pulling them…it was a defensive play that lacks creativity going forward and even at a point in the game we did possessed them but just a lack of creativity that mellow down Super eagles play…

  • Somebody ask Nigeria to bring back Sisia because super eagles lack direction in only one game ok,but the way i see it this guy lacks understanding

  • Ademola 3 years ago

Mr Femi is not only out of point but lacks analytical skill.the eagles lack creativity .kelechi to me cant play a playmaker role, likewise iwobi this was the reason our play didn’t pick as expected otherwise if Mikel were to be there we would have beaten them silly, then besides the polish knew allowing us to settle down in the game could expose them so they were a little rough in their approach of the game.i know it most of these European countries would always find it difficult to beat us .then i think in the absence of Mikel ,Joel Obi can play the playmaker role while onazi and ndidi play behind him .then i discovered ndidi has not really been performing for eagles as he has been doing for his club.
Now fifa would be disappointed that a nation ranked 51 beat the 6th best nation in the world.

  • Great Play from the boys. My own view of the game: Leon Balogun and Ekong partnership in the defence line was superb and they both display understanding. Uzoho is the best Nigeria can offer right now and was superb later in the game after a Nervy start. Bryan Idowu should remain as our No. 3 while Tyronne Ebuehi should automatically be our RB that guy always amaze me. Ndidi and Joel combo was undisputable. Ndidi never afraid to throw that leg so as to regain the ball. Going forward became a problem immediately Joel Obi left the pitch which shows how valuabe he is to the National team. The problem with Alex Iwobi is he always have his Good days and Bad days and today was not too good for him. Captain Mikel is the reason our attack blossom most times and we all saw that today. Individual play was mostly exhibited in the match and Moses made use of that to get the PK by making so many dribbles. For those blaming Ighalo, kindly tell me how a striker is involved in a game if he doesnt get passes? They all did well

  • Kelechi is not a good replacement for Captain Mikel and caused lack of co-ordination going forward. The midfield looks like a garbage without Mikel. So our Focus should be getting a good replacement for Mikel cuz i think Mikel is going to retire after the World Cup. John Ogu should be tested in that role next time maybe

  • Ifeanyi 3 years ago

This is the essence of the high profile friendly matches, the technical crew have seen the lapses they will do the corrections. The players themselves will gain confidence and be more exposed and the bonding will continue, above all they played well, more matches like this will help the team.

  • Edoman of New Jersey, USA. 3 years ago

My second comment because of Femi. l am sure Femi did not watch the same match we all saw tonight. As usual, Moses was our hero tonight. He was everywhere and as he made his usual run and as a result Moses made the penalty possible and scored the only goal of the match. Playing away match in Europe is not a cake-walk. Femi, please stop thrashing your own. Our Coach is far batter than the Polish’s Couch. Siasia could not qualify us for African Nation Games Why was it that other African Countries wouldn’t take him on since then.? Siasia is good for the junior Olympics Games as a Couch. Nigerians are very happy tonight. Femi go see the match again and not come here come spoil our belle.

Those that were clamouring for Joel Obi , I think reality has done on u guys. The guy could not prove you right. Mikel we missed you

    • charles 3 years ago

joel was used in the deep lying defensive midfield position, not in the hole behind the striker that mikel usually plays in.

  • Thank God our world cup opponents are losing in there friendlies. Croatia lost 2-0 in favour of Peru and Iceland also lost 3-0 in favour of Mexico. However, this are friendly marches. But there is hope at the end of the tunnel. Keep of winning SE.

  • John Cena 3 years ago

With the way Nigeria played against Poland, it showed we do not have a creative player with great vision, therefore the ideal thing is to use Kelechi as a striker and this means the responsibility to score goals will rest on all the 4 attacking players(Iwobi, Mikel, Moses, and Iheanacho). Using a point man (Ighalo) when we don’t have creative players means we will be short one because Ighalo will be isolated but Kelechi can still drop deep and can also pass. We also need Etebo back because of his work rate and Mikel because of his calmness. The team will definitely get better when they train together for a long time

  • The game was bad and boring, till now iheanacho and Iwobi don’t know the position that is suitable for them, Iwobi is just concentrating more on skills than understanding matches. Moses should stop individual football and try to move along with his teammates, Musa should not even b included in the squad to Wc, mean while the coach should constantly play Leon Balogun Ekong, idowu and Tyronne Ebuehi at the back for the to be able to blend and get use to they selfs. well lastly the coach should start looking for a technical good play maker apart from mikel
