Moses Rested As Chelsea Reach Carabao Cup Semi-Finals

By James Agberebi:

Chelsea needed a late goal to see off a spirited Bournemouth in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

Super Eagles forward Victor Moses was not in Chelsea’s matchday squad.

A Willian opener and a late goal from Alvaro Morata sealed Chelsea’s passage into the last four.

Dan Gosling had equalised for Bournemouth with just one minute left in the game.

Gosling had the first attempt on goal in the sixth minute after the ball was squared to him by Adam Smith but he fired wide.

But it was Chelsea who took the lead in the 12th minute thanks to Willian who tapped into an empty goal after Cesc Fabregas squared the ball to him.

Fifteen minutes into the game Bournemouth were forced into an early change as Jermain Defoe was replaced by Jordon Ibe as he failed to shake off an earlier challenge by Ethan Ampadu.

In the 23rd minute, Ibe almost drew Bournemouth level after pinching the ball off Willian but could only hit his shot against the side netting.

Chelsea thought they should have been awarded a penalty on 36 minutes after Michy Batshuayi went down inside the box but the referee waved play on.

With five minutes left Ryan Fraser sent in a dangerous ball into the Chelsea area but Ampadu cleared the danger.

Bournemouth edged the early part of the second half and went close on two occasions but the Chelsea defence did well enough to weather the storm.

The visitors continued to dictate ask all the questions in the second half and were close to drawing level but Gosling blazed his effort over the bar after he was set up by Lys Mousset.

With 12 minutes left, Ibe was presented with a chance following a breakaway by Bournemouth but his shot went narrowly wide.

Callum Wilson was next with an opportunity for Bournemouth but his low strike was stopped by Willy Caballero.

In the 89th minute, Bournemouth’s persistence eventually paid off as Gosling drew them level firing past Caballero from the edge of the box.

But straight from the kick-off Chelsea went 2-1 up thanks to Morata who poked the ball beyond Artur Boruc following a brilliant back heel from Eden Hazard.
